How the F*** are Ya!?
Man, I feel good being a part of this!
Aaaand here we go:
I live in the high desert (think pine forests and oceanic grass meadows) in a small town located in Oregon. My day job is caring for my 2-year-old son but that’s only one dimension of my life. I’m a new player in the crypto assets arena I’ve been at it now for a little over a month and I’ve graduated from just looking at the gains to being really taken by the potential of blockchain. I see blockchain as a disruptive/foundational technology. Kind of like AM radio or transistors. I think this because I agree with the conclusion of Tim Wu's book: Master Switch
I like to build stuff when I get the chance.
A cedar railing I put up at our old house.
And lately I’ve been using cardboard and newspaper to do simple projects with my son which is cool. But once I get my new workshop in order I’ll be posting about that no doubt. I’m an amateur woodworker. I got into it because I wanted to built custom Arcade machines. So, I built one last year for my friend and he set it up at his tattoo studio. Hopefully you can see the picture.
The podium top with holes cut out
Here's the cabinet mostly built
Here's the primer coat
This is after the chrome trim went on and I'm fuckin around with paint composition ideas
Wiring up the guts. It runs off of a raspberry pi 3. I got about 3000 games on there.
GAME TIME! (He specifically asked me just leave the cabinet doors black because he wants to load it up with stickers)
Also, one of my favorite woodworkers is a guy named Roger Heitzman at Heitzmanstudios.com (I don’t know him personally, but I aspire to have that kind of skill one day. I have other favorites, but I’ll leave it there).
I love to bake.
Pro tip: If you don't want your cheesecake top to crack accross the middle cut the bake time short by 10 min and just turn the oven off and walk the fuck away to let cool. Don't even crack the door. Works for me anyway.
This Cake is a challenge. It's called a Dobos Torte it's seven layers of very thin crumb with equally thin layers of mocha frosting. I made this for my grandmother
My grandfather lived and worked as a baker in Budapest Hungary before escaping the war (mostly the Russians) with my grandmother. And just this past year I got to go Budapest with my grandmother and meet with my 91-year-old cousin who was a part of the Hungarian revolution and she was an actress. I’ll have a separate post about her later.
Here she is in one of her performances.
I’m a fan of MMA (mixed martial arts) I don’t follow careers, but I do watch random fights on you tube. Just this year I’ve taken up Jujitsu myself because I was tired of watching. It’s a great thing to do I think. It makes you get real with yourself and your body. It’s also a workout motivator lol. I try to get just a smidgen stronger for the next class. I still suck a lot, but the atmosphere is supportive and friendly (also funny) and I’m happy to report that tonight I got my first legitimate submission! Progress!
I have formal education in the field of applied Horticulture. I love plants and I enjoy the relationship I have with them.
This is a passion flower and some bees I snapped a picture of when I worked at a botanical garden
I do landscape design on the side when the occasional job comes up and I design in the old draftsman style with vellum and ink. I do use computers for some things, but I find I get my ideas out better when the fingers move the pen/pencil. Here’s an example of my draft work. (sadly, the client I did this for decided to go in a different direction but oh well.)
I’ll be posting plant related stuff possibly some gardening tips here and there. I want to do posts about some of Donald Culross Peattie’s work and I’ll probably share stuff from my home horticulture library.
Currently the library is still packed in boxes. Soon they will have a new set of shelves to call home.
I also worked for a gourmet mushroom grower. We grew Shiitake’s, Lions mane, various oyster mushrooms and, piopinos. I did a little bit of mushroom foraging but I’m no expert. Although you find some interesting stuff out there. Here is an Amanita muscaria var. inzengae
No idea what this is lol
Pretty sure this is Artomyces pyxidatus but I could be wrong looks really close though.
The entire tree is colonized!!! (not edible though) Also these pictures were taken in the eastern part of the united states.
I was really excited when my friend and I found this chicken of the woods!!
I just liked my maitakes, morels, and my chicken of the woods. But now that I recently moved to Oregon I’ll have to discover what’s here. Mushroom culture (think petri dish) is something I know about. Which is a great segue into psychedelics lol
I’m currently doing some research into micro-dosing. I think it’s fascinating. I have the knowledge to make it happen but I’m still on the fence. If there is anyone out there with direct experience and would like to share send me a message in private to talk about it. I’m very curious.
In my early twenties I did some busking in new England. It was mainly a magic show (coin matrix stuff and then a cups and balls performance) but I would also do some contact juggling and club juggling to get a bit of attention and then go into the act. I’m super rusty now (still good enough to fool a toddler though) but who the hell knows this Steemit platform has enlivened me. I’m having thoughts of knocking the rust off for a few months then post a video or something. Could be fun.
I have an active dream life. (sorry no pictures) I have frequent vivid dreams and while I won’t be boring you with all that I will say that I’m one of the few people who enjoy hearing about other peoples dreams so if you want to share one I would love to read about it!
I’m a Jordan Peterson supporter/fan/person he’s helped. A friend recommended him to me after he saw the depressive state I was in. This was a few years ago. I’m going to do a few posts talking about how his ideas have affected my life in a positive way and maybe it might help someone else.
Let’s see did I miss anything? Oh yeah so in 2013 I drew this image.
Here is the negative version of it I think it looks kinda cool this way.
It took me nearly 4 months of chipping away at it for an hour at a time in the evening. (listening to a lot of Aesop Rock.) It’s imbedded with a lot of symbolism and meaning. If you like it, you have my permission to save it and print it and stick it somewhere. I’ll also be doing a post about it’s meaning in the future. But just know that it’s not just a page out of an adult coloring book lol. I had to make a lot of slow decisions. I did this in pencil first then I inked it over. It’s called “Mysterious Universe” maybe not the best name but it captures the big idea of the drawing.
Ok and lastly, I’m a big fan of science fiction books and movies. So, no doubt I’ll be posting about that as well.
This is Freddie Mercury
So here we are.
On Steemit.
Trying to figure out how exposing ourselves in a more honest manner can bring us meaning, money, & meaning 😉. I’ve been lurking in the introduction boards just. Fucking. Fascinated…. by this whole thing. I’m not in an Echo chamber in this place. At least not yet. Unlike Facebook this place emphasizes and encourages (by its structure) a person to learn about people who are very different from them.
However, the premise of this place is a double-edged sword don’t you think? Do you feel it at all? Of course you do. On one hand the general feel is like I just walked into a bar where they give you MDMA at the door. And on the other hand, I feel like people are just trying to figure out what’s going to get the most upvotes. I want to point out that I’m not demonizing these people. I think its completely natural to think this way. But I think (and probably many of you think) it’s more interesting to play the Steemit game by being honest/to the best of your ability be who you are/say what you actually think/and continue to walk off the cliff of truth and see what people say about it.
In theory people will notice this honesty and connect with it. Profit is a result.
Blah blah blah
we all know this right? But I see people on here that post like they are on Facebook or Instagram. Old habits I guess, and then there are the people who do the “I’ll up-vote you and you up-vote me!!”
Yuck. I wince when I see that stuff. You also won’t see me doing it. If I up-vote your post it’s because I read it and I thought it was nifty dammit. Not because were making a deal. (I have no doubt I'll get my fair share of people who post that on this intro post oh well.)
The types of intro posts I see concentrations of are:
1.) The cute teenage girl post with absolutely no content other than a curtsy sentence and a pic of them at the beach.
2.) The Finance my traveling lifestyle post and I’ll show you pictures of food you’ll never eat.
3.) I’m a tech person check out my skills
4.) The “Look at this ridiculous lifestyle I lead isn’t it great?! Please give me money I need to buy a plane ticket to Mongolia to try yaks milk straight from the teat.” (similar to the travel one but not quite)
5.) STEEM TO THE MOON!!!
6.) I had a REVELATION! Steemit could be used for sharing things with people that do the thing that I do!
7.) Upvote me and I’ll upvote you!!!
Anyway, I poke fun a bit but I really am impressed with the level of honesty I see here. I think it’s all a part of the growth process as our community (can I say that yet?) matures. There is a lot of enthusiasm here. People are dreaming and sharing. And that can’t be bad.
But it’s an experiment still and there are still people here that give zero fucks about the vision and just want to cash in.
Its people like this that are going strain and test the resilience of Steemit. Hopefully there will be enough good people participating to create a healthy platform.
Thanks for taking the time.
P.S. I'm going to get better at this formatting thing I promise.
Hello!
I'm writing this after having read your comment on my Star Wars article (here's the shameless self-promotion: https://steemit.com/starwars/@vladcostea/vlad-s-blog-star-wars-the-last-jedi-non-spoiler-review-december-19th-2017).
I feel truly honored that you took your time to write such a long, thoughtful, and sincere comment and I guess I would truly like to talk to you in person one day. It would definitely have been easier to meet if you were in the country of your ancestors, since Romania is on the eastern side of the border.
Furthermore, I truly appreciate your honesty and genuine personality. I also envy you for your practical skills (I'm a PhD candidate in political philosophy who can barely hammer a nail properly and messes up something as basic as cutting a straight line with scissors).
I will definitely follow you and your posts, you seem to have a lot to tell and it's great that this platform isn't a bubble (yet). Also, I would love to read a humorous post of yours where you mock those who try to hard to get likes/followers. Your short list was spot-on and hilarious in its brutal honesty.
PS: In regards to the formatting you inquired, it's really simple: make sure your paragraphs aren't huge blocks of text, add a subtitle/header every 300-400 words, and give people reading breaks by inserting a picture in each section of your article. It does take a little practice, but you will get used to it - I've been writing on blogs for quite some time, so to me it comes naturally at this point.
PPS: For extra exposure, edit your article and add the other 4 tags you're entitled to. Use general sections like "writing", "blog" and "life" for the sake of inserting your piece in a greater pool of articles on the same topic, but also add something small which niches it to a very specific category (in your case, "DIY", "woodwork", "hobby", or anything you might think is relevant).
It will help your work get exposed a little better, and you will also make some more money. One of the principles of fair capitalism is that all labor should be paid, right? You might as well try to make the most out of it!
Welcome to Steem @ideaman. Feel free to follow me @kanasite and upvote. Cheers :)
Welcome to steemit, long but good intro :)
Would love to see some step by step guides on what you are building in your free time! Gladly resteemed you via @welcoming, my service for sharing promising newcomers like you! Greets!
Do you have any idea why my post doesn't show up in the introduce yourself section? I'm sure I screwed something up...
What do you mean? If it had not shown up there, I wouldn't have found it ;)
But try to use more tags in the future, better for visibility!
Oh ok I see whats going on. There was just a whole bunch of posts that pushed it way down there.
Very nice first post. Only one suggestion: Make the posts a little shorter and put some explanations on our projects. This will get you more views. Welcome to steemit. Following you and resteemed to get you more exposure.
I think your right. I got a bit carried away here. Thanks for the feedback.
Welcome to Steemit!
That is one sick arcade machine!
Thanks man! It was a fun building it.
What an intro! Welcome to steemit @ideaman. You have such wide interests and passions. Really looking forward to reading your next posts! Nice to have you here with us!
Thanks @philodendron! I think I may have over did it but at the same time I'm happy with it. Is there a post that you submitted that you think I should read?
True you could have made a good dozen posts out of this one hahaha but at the same time nothing beats a spectacular entrance! Personally it drew me in even more because of that. If you feel like reading one of our posts I would suggest our introduction post so you can see who we are, maybe also you might like our post philodendron forever, you can see our plant collection, we're plant lovers too. If you need anything or have questions there is a huge community on discord to help out. It would be awesome to have you with us and chat too!
Love the intro! You seem very interesting and I can't wait for future posts.
Best of Luck!
-Kyle
