You can check any given tag's popularity by visiting the following URL (swap out "tagname" for yer actual tag, of course): https://steemit.com/created/TAGNAME
This will pop up recent posts that used this tag, ordered from most recent first. Observe:

Although it is not one of the popular tags on the homepage, there is actually a fair amount of activity here:
