Hi, I'm Eric and I'm Addicted to Writing

in #introduceyourself8 years ago (edited)

Hello, Steemit! I’m working a bit backwards here, publishing my introduction a day after my first two blog posts. Nevertheless, I’ve been writing for more than two decades and have published eight books, have appeared in magazines and literary journals, and have written countless blog posts.

Since 2013 I’ve eschewed the traditional publishing world in favor of being an author-prenuer…exclusively self-publishing. Currently I’m trying to make writing my full time gig, one of the reasons I’m so excited to have found you! My ultimate goal is to become a digital nomad and travel the world with my Macbook and as small of a suitcase as I can manage. I just turned forty-five and would like to accomplish this nomad-ish lifestyle while I’m still young enough to really enjoy it.

I’ve also been meditating for over two decades and started teaching meditation about a year ago. My newest book, The Perfect Pause, is a meditation guide and is currently with beta readers. Once this book is published (est. Aug/Sept 2016) I will be launching one-on-one and group video meditation instruction via Facetime/Skype.

My goal is to add value here through my years of experience and also learn from others.

My website is here if you’d like to learn more about me: http://www.ericvancewalton.net/

I’m also on Facebook (search, Eric Vance Walton, Author)

I’m impressed with Steemit so far. I’m happy to be here and can’t wait to meet more of you!

a mighty fine place you've found yourself here, as a writing addict... ;-)

I very much agree!

Just read 'The Heiress and the Pea' and it had me laughing. Great work. Would love to your contribution to this community.

Thank you. I wrote that 11 years ago but it still holds true today. : )

I just posted the Heiress and the Pea here on my blog. : )

Can't wait to see what talents you bring to Steemit. It seems you were made for Stemit.

Thank you, I'm really liking the feeling of this community so far. There seem to be a lot of like-minded people here.

Hi, So glad to see you made it on here!

I don't know how i missed your posts before, but they were quality. Keep up the good work.

I suggest you confirm your steemit account on www.ericvancewalton.net, it will let people know you are real and your content is unique.

Thanks!

I appreciate that, Dan! I've only been on Steemit since yesterday. This has been a lot of fun for me so far. This forum is so much better than social media. Question, how do I go about confirming my Steemit account on my website?

Just post something there that says your username here.

I'll do that tomorrow. Thanks, Dan!

Eric, I feel like I have so many questions. Here's one. How has the industry of writing changed from when you started to now? Today a writer (or any creative, like a photographer or musician) has so many digital tools to get in front of a large audience, this must impact how you publish. What are some of the tools you use? Okay that was more than one.

It's a totally different business now than it was in the early 1990's. Writers have much more control of their destinies now and you don't need to beg and grovel to get that "Yes" from the gatekeepers of the publishing industry any longer. My advice would be to build a website (I love Squarespace), connect it to Mailchimp (or something similar) and start blogging and building your email mailing list. The key is to build your readership before you self publish a book. I've had the most luck with Amazon's CreateSpace (it's free). Release a book 12 to 18 months after you begin blogging and you have your customer base already built. Check out James Altucher's book, Choose Yourself and the Choose Yourself community on Facebook. They're super supportive. Please let me know if you have any other questions as well. I'm always happy to help other authors and creative people.

Man that is great advice!! thanks

You're welcome!
