Self Introduction: Making Housing Affordable as a Social Business using Blockchain

Hi, my name is Eric Lim, hailing from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My account at Steemit is @erico47 and I am a semi-retired realtor, having worked in the Real Estate industry for more than 25 years, covering areas in Malaysia, Singapore, China, Vietnam, USA and Australia etc.

My main interest now is on the social business aspects of the Real Estate industry, such as overcoming the disparity of property ownerships amongst young people who are practically being “priced out” from the current market due to inflation. The other related issues concern the multiple usages of property as an investment rather than consumption or being a Prosumer (being both producer and consumer of housing), particularly using the principle of the Sharing Economy or P2P (Peer-to-Peer) platform.

I personally believe the disparity of property ownership could be overcome by “home-shares” or ownership-in-commons, such as the “Tokenization of Real Property using the Blockchain technology” (ownership or usage of property “broken down to small pieces” conceptually, possibly through an ICO or Initial Coin Offering). This is implementation of P2P in a truly distributed and decentralized manner, forming the Commons. Use of the Blockchain technology will adequately address the issues of ownership tracking and management process connected with such an approach.

The multiple usage of the relevant property includes Live (Second Home), Work (Small Office Home Office), Travel (Holiday Exchange and Couch-surfing), Learn (Life-Long-Learning) and Play (Relaxation and Recreation), yielding the much desired economy of scope (not just economy of scale) to achieve holistic integration of LIVE-WORK-TRAVEL-LEARN-PLAY (LW-T-LP) facilities or lifestyle and ecosystem.

As a proof of concept and feasibility, I have created a working prototype of the project at Langat Jaya Condominium, Cheras, Selangor, Malaysia. I have been using the prototype show-house as a Co-working space for Lean Business Startup or Incubator or Accelerator (WORK). The project prototype is also listed with Airbnb as home-stay unit (LIVE). Furthermore, as an active contributor to the Collaborative Consumption social movement, I have to date hosted more than 500 travelers / couch-surfers, and have tremendously enjoyed the process (TRAVEL). On top of these, Courses, Seminars, Meetup sessions have also been continually conducted at site (LEARN). Last but not least, the site has also been used as venue for film-previews, karaoke, access to Jungle trekking / water-falls and hot-springs available at its immediate neighborhood (PLAY), truly living up to the claim of being a “Hypercube”, hence the name of the project as Hypercube @ SOHOland.

The larger objective of the project is to duplicate the “Hypercube” locally in other cities or towns in Malaysia, then regionally to ASEAN countries and globally to other parts of the world. The project was video-taped by Tanya (and her 11-year old son) who as couch-surfers stayed for 10 days at the project and reported her experience to the Ukrainian TV (novy.tv) and broadcasted over its channel (I have a copy of the video on file, but could not embed here or Youtube due to copyright issues). It is planned that the expansion of the project will primarily done via ICO or Initial Coin Offering using the Blockchain technology which is also being used by Steemit. . The ultimate end result would be a network / platform of global social businesses or enterprises that collectively owns a global Property Chain via the Blockchain. This will prove to be highly disruptive to the business of Airbnb and housing developers, and resulting in a global environment that is socially, economically and ecologically sustainable and equitable, and even more significant, show-casing a Commons Movement and Lifestyle holistically integrated for the well-being and happiness of global citizens.
