You’ve probably heard the expression “Repetition is the mother of all learning.” It definitely contains a kernel of truth, but if you really want to improve your learning skills, there’s a much better way than sheer repetition.

Self-quizzing trumps repetition

Research has shown that self-quizzing, which involves actively testing yourself on what you’ve learned, can be up to 50 percent more effective than other learning strategies, including repetition alone.

In 2006, researchers Jeffrey Karpicke and Henry Roediger at Washington University conducted a study which demonstrated this. They gave a piece of text to two groups of participants. The first group read it four times, while the second group only read it once, but then tested themselves on what they had read.

When both groups were tested a few days later, the group who had quizzed themselves remembered much more of the text.

So if you want a better way to remember something you’ve read than reading it all over again, quiz yourself on the contents. You’ll be much more likely to remember it!
