Lesson Learnt from Interview Failure

in #interviews7 years ago (edited)

Key points of this article:
*Act as if you were in the job position itself to truly understand the role
*Research on the job process, not just by its definition
*Research on the company's financial & background (Annual Report)
*Research on the importance of the job role towards the company

It's true when they say you are called for interview means you have been shortlisted candidate from all the hundreds of applicants out there, because they see something in you. So they invite you in for an interview session, just a step closer to enter into the firm as their employee.

The most essential elements that you must equip yourself is to be prepared. When it comes to the interview session, act as if you are in the position that you applied for i.e. if you applied for taxation or maybe as a fund reporting analyst; act like you are in that job scope. So make sure you did a little research on it so that you wouldn't be so surprise when the manager is explaining to you the role of it. Find out the job process and not just based on definition of it. Thus you will slowly understand how important the role of the position to the company.

Next, from there on, all sorts of question could be predicted and better prepared to tackle the questions addressed.

Some expected questions based on the position you applied are as follows:
i. What do you expect to see yourself in 5 years time.

  • You would expect to be given a chance to lead a team in the near future and being entrusted with a large role in the company. [example]

ii. This job might require you to work extra hours

  • My dad was a hard working man, and I make him as my exemplary. A motivation driven for me as well.

iii. What do you do in your spare time

  • I would exercise in my spare time and jogging is a simple routine to follow to maintain our health level. And I would enjoy a good rest to recover my energy from working because I believe maintaining a good health is important in a stressful working environment and increase our focus.

iv. When is your hardest challenge you face & how you manage them

  • For the interviewer, they will not consider you challenges is not the hardest one, but it is how you put your sentence to make it feel like a burden for you to handle (personally) which makes them feel the same way.

It is important to know that any situational item, should be included with a "team management element", that is what firm is all about, working together as a team. There is some tips given by the RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) that I think a very useful to structurally answer a behavioral-based interview style:
When asked questions, frame your answer in 3 step.

  • Talk briefly about the situation, detail how you handled the issue and discuss the positive outcome. (Situation -> Action -> Result)

On top of that, I would highly recommend you to read on their Annual Report to have a rough overview of the company's performance and how they are the key players in the industry. By knowing their performance, you could nicely sump up the whole interview and convince the manager to embark this journey with them pursuant to the company's objective.
