6 ways to survive job-search SILENCE

in #interview8 years ago (edited)

Many times after a person submits their resume for a position, they do not get any response. Only silence is the reply. Some organizations are polite enough to acknowledge receipt of a resume with an automated email. However, the common practice today is to only respond if there is actually an interest in the candidate. Since there are an overwhelming number of applicants today, it is not feasible for organizations to reply to everyone. This behavior leaves the job-seeker in limbo wondering whether someone is going to respond; hence job-search silence. Here are some tips to defeat the sinking feeling in the pit of the stomach, while waiting in job-search silence:

  1. If you have contact information for the hiring manager, email and inquire if you are still being considered. However, be certain that you have given ample time for a decision.

  2. Spend time discovering your strengths and talents. Survey your friends and family about what things you excel at doing. Review past performance evaluations and use the strengths mentioned in them to help devise what types of positions will best employ your gifts and talents. Carve out some time everyday to communicate with God and find out what specific kind of genius exists inside of you. Once you pray, listen to Him reveal why you were specifically created and fashioned .

  3. Focus on improving your current skill set to make yourself more marketable. It has been said, “Preparation is never lost time!” Taking time to learn something new will distract you from worrying about job-search silence. You may start with something small like taking a course at a community college. Sometimes, if you are unemployed, you can take classes at no cost to you.

  4. Make a list of target companies and initiate connections with individuals associated with those firms. Network with focus and determination. Use your social networking sites like Linkedin.com to assist you in targeting individuals in the companies that you have chosen.

  5. Work on a few freelance projects. Finding a project will require networking skills, creativity and research skills. You have a lot to offer. You can start by searching for projects with familiar entrepreneurs who can utilize your skills. Or you may inquire with freelance websites like guru.com. Or check the classifieds and www.craigslist.com for projects.

  6. Intensify your search by talking to more people, sending out more resumes and committing to never give up until you find the position you want. Whatever you pursue relentlessly, you will eventually find.

This list will keep you from being anxious while you wait in job-search silence.
