Tips to Stay Safe Online [Part1]

A digital currency issued by a central bank would be a global target for cyber attacks, cyber counterfeiting, and cyber theft. - Jerome Powell

The Internet is a public place that can also have threats and it is up to you to protect yourself. Here are some tips to help you to stay safe when using the internet.

1. Avoid logging in public networks/Wi-Fi especially if your account has money inside. Browsing “incognito or private mode”.

I know some of you don’t know what is incognito, but I’m pretty sure that most of the boys know this (You know what I mean 😄)

Incognito is a feature of the browser, will NOT protect you from hackers. Some of you think that it is a safer way to be browsing the net. It is a fact that Incognito mode doesn’t save history, but it doesn’t stop your operating system, your router, or the websites themselves from logging that you’re there. When streaming content, whether you’re in ‘Incognito’ mode or not, you open yourself up to the data store, and this mode does not hide your IP address, meaning that information such as your location, your browser, your operating system and even your physical address might still be seen.

2. Avoid visiting the untrusted website and don’t believe everything you read.

Hackers might create fake websites and pop-ups with enticing messages intended to draw you in and download malware. Anyone can publish information online, so before accepting a statement as fact or taking action, verify that the source is reliable. And please, don’t click on a link to learn more. If something sounds too good to be true, then most likely it’s fraudulent or harmful.

3. Install and update an antivirus software on your computer.

Antivirus Software (AV) is used to detect, neutralize or eradicate malware (malicious software). AV software not only will identify and destroy the computer virus, but it’s also designed to fight off other kinds of threats such as phishing attacks, worms, Trojan horses, rootkits and more (Soon I will create a blog about the different Internet threats). Use only one antivirus software to avoid conflict.

4. Be mindful of what you share online and what website you share it too.

5. Never post anything about a future vacation.

You do not need to advertise when you will be away from your home for an extended period of time. Robbers are searching for these clues to provide them targets for their next theft. Bragging to the world about your perfect vacation is fine, just do it after you return. Because it is similar to posting, “Rob my house at this date”.

The first step in securing our cyber future is education, and that means everything from educating individuals to companies to the next generation of IT professionals. - Dan Lipinski
