"Link Rot", and why Moose Hentai is worth preserving

in #internet3 years ago (edited)

As someone who goes deep into the cavernous underbelly of pre-2000s internet, it's quite disappointing to hit dead ends every third link. So much information just... lost. I've been trying to read up on ways to solve the very real problem of "link rot": way too many websites die an ignominious death, because either the owners went bankrupt, forgot to pay their bills, or just faded into obscurity.

Imagine a world, where every word, every tweet, every duck selfie was minted for perpetuity. That's a metric crapton of BS, but heck, most of humanity is BS. Is all of that crud worth preserving? Maybe not. BUT, it ought to be, if only to explore how far we've come - from the Moon Landing, to Moose hentai.

The internet is a magical place. Historians from 10,000 years later will be thrilled.

And horrified.
