The guy´s name is Albert Hofmann, he first produced LysergSäureDiäthylamid (it´s a bit of a hobby of mine to memorize long, complicated names) in 1938, did his famous experiment on himself in 1943.
There is even some symphonic music and a movie about him and his troubled child LSD.
