What Is Your Best Argument For/Against "Net Neutrality"?

in #internet7 years ago (edited)

below are two articles that share a different opinion about "net neutrality" than the ones that have been shared all over the internet in recent days. I'm still torn on this one and have not made up my mind because I don't have enough technical knowledge of the subject, and although I pretty much oppose government regulation of any kind because I don't think they have the right to exist, I'm not informed enough to know if the doom and gloom outcome that people are predicting is likely, or if its even possible, considering how cartelized the industry already is (due to prior regulation)

Also, as someone in a rural area, ive already been paying between 100-200 dollars for terrible internet for years, so im curious to hear peoples thoughts about how this would affect internet in those types of places. Could it give us more options? or allow the few options we have to raise monopolized prices?

Again..im not sure how I feel entirely...feel free to discuss

Not really sure. Our system here (Portugal) is pretty good. The government regulates it as an utility, but competition between the three main telecoms is so great that we have excellent service at relatively low prices (very low prices by american standards).

that is interesting you say portugal, because ive been seeing this article pop up everywhere in my feed...do you know if any of this is accurate or not?

Partially true, but heavily biased. The package showed in the article only applies to smartphones, and it's not an additional package, the price displayed is the total price. To specify, only "home" internet is treated as an utility.
It is, however, a much poorer offer than their competition, and from what I read in portuguese forums and social media about it, this campaign is failing hard.

thanks for the clarification. i was really curious to hear from someone from portugal about that...glad you chimed in!
