This video corresponds to the first 3D model of snowflakes melting in the atmosphere. Developed by scientist Jussi Leinonen of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the model has been completed based on a new study on the behavior of snowflakes.

The model corresponds to a common snow flake of about one centimeter in length and composed of ice crystals and reproduces the melting process of snowflakes as observed in nature: it begins at the ends and the drops of snow. liquid water will merge into the nucleus, until finally the entire snowflake becomes a drop of water that will reach the ground in the form of rain.

According to researchers, up to 66 percent of the rains start as snowfall in the upper layers of the atmosphere. Understanding this process has numerous implications, from those related to weather forecasts to telecommunications or air navigation: it is something that for example "affects observations with remote sensing instruments: a radar 'profile' of the atmosphere shows at altitude where snow and hail melt a very bright layer, much more than the atmospheric layers that are above and below that area, and why this is not entirely clear. A detailed model like this can help scientists better understand what happens in that area of the atmosphere and how it affects the radar's wavelengths".
