I think its always a combination of intentions. Even if you act partially due to your ego, a lot of other aspects of your personality come into play, some which you may not even be aware of.

I had this same dilemma for a long time, and what I realized was that intentions don't matter as much as we think we do, it's always the actions and the result of the situation that played out.

The best thing we can do and hold ourselves accountable for is to have good judgment and act upon that judgment. The rest is up for interpretation, so to speak.
