Teaching secondary students English using Instagram? What are your opinions on this?
Personally, I think it is quite a brilliant idea but I would say there are some gray areas that we need to consider if we really want to use this social media platform as a tool to teach English to kids of 7 until 12 years of age. (or older) Some might suggest that using Instagram to learn English is a great idea and I agree with that. However, I think it will be hard for the teachers and even students who live in the suburbs or those who don’t even mobile phone service in where they live. How are they supposed to keep up with the lessons? The idea to use Instagram as a tool in the teaching and learning process surfaced after some teachers realized that their students have no motivation to speak English at all. Students spent most of their time going on the internet and go to their social media platforms to interact with people all around the world. They (teachers) believe that by using Instagram in their learning process, students will be more confident in speaking, writing in English and they get to have fun while learning. By using this social media platform, some suggest that students can improve their writing skills and enhance their grammar when they type a caption for their posts. Students can even post a video of themselves speaking in English online and this will boost a student’s confidence to speak this foreign language. However, students who come from a poor family might not be able to join the online lessons because they simply don’t have mobile phones. We cannot guarantee that students will focus solely on the lesson if they were to use social media (basically their mobile phones) during class right? It is not impossible to monitor what the students are doing or browsing on their phones but it will be a bit of a challenge to do so. For me, using social media to teach is a brilliant idea, however, will I apply this in my classroom of the future? That is the question. I might use it depending on where I am going to teach. I need to consider my students condition as well. Mobile data is not cheap and it might cost them a lot of money just to join an hour or two of online lessons. Nevertheless, teachers who think this is something they can do to make learning fun should try and apply this into their lessons and get feedback from their students if this approach is burdening them or what not.
