Instagram is a social network and application to upload photos and videos. Its users can also apply photographic effects such as filters, frames, thermal similarities, underlying areas in the concave bases, retro colors, and then share the photographs in the same social network or in others such as Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr and Twitter.

A distinctive feature of the application is that it gives a square shape to the photographs in honor of the Kodak Instamatic and Polaroid cameras, contrasting with the 16: 9 and 4: 3 aspect ratio currently used by most mobile phone cameras . Nowadays, the photos can be horizontal and vertical without the use of white borders, although these are partially cut out. There is also a private media to talk about called Instagram Direct.

Created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, Instagram was launched in October 2010. This application quickly gained popularity, reaching more than 100 million active users in April 2012 and more than 300 million in December 2014. Instagram was originally designed to iPhone and in turn is available for your iPad and iPod brothers with the iOS system 3.0.2 or higher. At the beginning of April 2012, an Android version was published, and in 2013 the beta version was released for Windows Phone and official for Windows 10 in 2016.

As of version 4.0 the application allows the user to take videos with a maximum duration of 1 minute. This new tool includes image stabilization.   The development of Instagram began in San Francisco, when Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger chose to focus their multiple functions HTML5 check-in Burbn in a mobile photography project. The product was released on the Apple App Store on October 6, 2010, named Instagram.   Shortly after the launch, Josh Riedel joined the team as Community Manager.

New live filters were included, option to apply blur effects to specific areas, high resolution image editing, optional borders, image rotation button and an update button.   On April 3, 2012 the version open to the public for Android came out.

A few weeks before, Instagram had announced that it was running tests on Android using a closed beta. In the following three months Instagram was evaluated more than one million times by Google Play users, thus becoming the fifth most evaluated application by those users in May 2013, the application had been evaluated more than 4 million times .

Also, the API of the application was released allowing third parties to create their own apps which would include Instagram services such as Instamap, Instahood or Instaweather.   On April 9, 2012, it was announced that Facebook had acquired the company for one billion USD. On December 17, 2012, Instagram updated its terms of privacy and conditions of use, granting the right to sell the photos of users to third parties without notice or compensation as of January 16, 2013.

Criticism from privacy advocates, consumers, National Geographic and celebrities such as Kim Kardashian led Instagram to undo the changes imposed in the declaration of privacy terms. However, Instagram lost a lot of users, who opted to switch to other services similar to Instagram. Instagram is currently working on the development of a new text to replace the controversial terms.   On May 2, 2013, Instagram introduced the possibility of tagging people and brands in any of the photos. In August 2016, Instagram adds the possibility to upload photos and videos whose duration is limited to one day in a new section called Instagram Stories, making a great nod to the Snapchat application, which could not be purchased at the time by the company of Facebook for $ 3,000 million USD.

On November 21, 2016, Instagram adds a new video service to Instagram Stories, this time live, with which you can initiate a retransmission to which users can join and send messages in it, in the style Periscope, since you can also give hearts to the issuer.   In December 2010, Instagram had one million registered users.
