TOUCHING STORY: THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE-NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS.

in #inspirational8 years ago

Good day great steemians and HAPPY NEW MONTH 🎆 , trust your week has been awesomely excellent, perhaps catching the fun here on steemit!

Well my aim for putting this article together is in three folds-

  1. To teach you.
  2. To Inspire you, and to
  3. Encourage you.

Just last Sunday, the 28th of January to be precise, @ ⛪ church while the sermon was going on, the pastor talking about being consistent and working even when failure shows her ugly face gave a clear instance with regards to the need to be fully on the line no matter what.

He gave a story about the mystery behind one of the highly admired and most biggest bridges ever built in human history #THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE#

Though he was very brief on it, but so inspired and filled with the enthusiasm for a greater tomorrow, I decided to do a further research, on this story, I wanted to really know if this story to a great extent was factual, ofcourse the pastor shouldn't have any reason to lie but learning more and clearing my conscious will always make me feel better.
SO I STARTED A RESEARCH TO REALLY KNOW THE MYSTERY BEHIND THIS BRIDGE*low-angle-view-of-brooklyn-bridge-against-cloudy-sky-at-sunset-picture-id553246647.jpg
The Brooklyn Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in the entire history of America.

The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge in NewYork city.
A project that started in 1869 and was completed later after 14 years in 1883.

A very great and highly admired structure standing tall and famous right in the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn connecting them together, spanning the East River.

the bridge 🌉 was formerly called the NEWYORK AND BROOKLYN BRIDGE*

Later renamed the BROOKLYN BRIDGE*
brooklyn-bridge-picture-id555338065.jpg
it has a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3m)*

It was the first steel-wire suspension bridge in the world* ☺
brooklyn-bridge-picture-id555338065.jpg
Carries 6 lanes of car roadway, car elevated trains, pedestrian and bicycle 🚲 runway.

And it's also good to be aware that commercial vehicles and buses are prohibited to use this bridge*

SO STRAIGHT FORWARD APART FROM ITS MAGNIFICENT PHYSICAL TREASURE OF ITS VIEW, WHATS SO INSPIRING ABOUT THIS BRIDGE*

well believe me the real question should be whats inspiring about the story behind it's creation!!

                          I'LL TELL YOU

it all started from the crazy or should I say playful but vision filled idea of JOHN ROEBLING.

an American states civil john-augustus-roebling-american-engineer-roebling-designed-suspension-picture-id615290386.jpgEngineer who was inspired to build a magnificent 🌉 bridge connecting NewYork and Long Island.

When he tabled his idea, world bridge building experts were consulted and saw the plan as impossible, of which they later told roebling to forget the idea that it could not be done.

It was stated that roebling was highly criticized and ridiculed about his idea at this period. He actually felt like an idiot, but in all he saw what others could not see and he understood the principles that said that "EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE THROUGH PLANNING" He believed that all he ever needed was the right team of people who think like himself.

He was able to convince his son WASHINGTON ROEBLING(a growing Engineer)washington-augustus-roebling-american-civil-engineer-1883-roebling-picture-id463914777.jpg that his dream was possible.
And very interesting, hes son BELEIVED IN HIM!!
So they set up a father/son team and together they did series of planning, mapping out concepts to achieve their possible DREAM*

This planning went on for a while and this time, it seemed the big picture started becoming very real and clear.

January 3 1870, the project kicked off and was going on as planned, but only few months after SOMETHING VERY TRAGIC HAPPENED 😔
😢 20170701_bkp510.jpg
while this great urban work progressed, John Roeblings foot slipped into a group of pylons (a support structure used to support bridges while under 🚧 construction) and this happened due to a shaky movement caused from a moving ferry (shiplike vessel ).

This seriously ended up crushing his toes and guess what,
His toes were amputated 😔 😢 leaving totally out of work in a very harsh pain for a human to bear.

Unfortunately John roebling died afterwards through some serious tetanus infection caused by his accident . Now believe me this is so sad for a great man of so much perseverance and determination, but in all I still believe the worst can happen at anytime*

BUT WHAT ABOUT HIS DREAM?? 🤔
engraving-depicts-a-nighttime-scene-as-fireworks-explode-the-the-of-picture-id620628952.jpg
Remember, John roebling was not working alone, yeah that's right he actually shared his vision with his son Washington roebling and yes ofcourse the young engineer took up with his father's vision effortlessly, and believe me or dont* that's why it's really good for all of us not to keep our dreams to ourselves.
Hey guys don't misqouate me!

I'm not saying you go about announcing your entire plans to the whole world, what I'm saying is it will be wise to share your dreams with people who believe in you and think like you as well.

So eventually Washington Roebling took over the project of this great dream plan.portrait-of-washington-roebling-eldest-son-of-john-a-roebling-chief-picture-id52277088.jpg
To a great extent Washington was progressing in making his father's dream structure come to live, but AGAIN something dint go quite well, yes Washington became Ill.

He contacted what was suspected to be a sea disease which was then unknown, as a matter of fact was first named "caisson" by Washington roeblings project physician Andrew Smith.

This became very bad as this led to sevre brain damage and this further led to a brain damage, which also in turn led to a serious paralysis.
So sad it was so bad that Washington was unable to walk, talk or even move his body.

I guess by now those who criticized this idea would be happy seeing even more reasons to take such a plan as stupid and impossible.

                   BUT LETS READ ON
                   *******************

upon all these things that were happening to Washington, he still BELEIVED IN THE DREAM BRIDGE of his father, which has now become his own dream. While on treatment, he went on to encourage his workers on the need for the dream to come true. But ofcourse they were even more discouraged picking reasons on why they should receive encouragement from a paralysed man. And believe me if you were to be Mr Washington roebling, this might look like the end. engraving-depicts-traffic-from-both-vehicles-and-pedestrians-on-the-picture-id620628948.jpg

BUT THEN SOMETHING HAPPENED!!!
😂 Lol, something always happens* ☺

yeah, something amazing happened
Roebling discovered one of his fingers could still move and guess what happened afterwards, he began to leverage on that finger using it to form communication codes with his wife EMILY ROEBLING, a woman with so much love understanding and intelligence.
He communicated with that finger to his wife for a long time, sharing the idea of how the bridge should be built, so to an extent his wife took up the project.

*If he wanted to call his engineers, he tapped his wifes arm.
*he as well used same pattern of tapping his finger to communicate in all ramification with his wife.

And for good 13 years, this special sign language coding was the only way and the last chance for the great BROOKLYN BRIDGE ideology to stand.
engraving-depicts-us-president-chester-a-arthur-and-others-at-the-picture-id620628950.jpg
So let's see this clearly****13 whole years Washington Roebling used a slight Sign language from his finger to pass the idea of his father's dream and this also meant that for 13 good years his wife Emily roebling tried to learn, understand and interpreted meanings from the movement of one finger. AMAZING!!!! ☺
In 1883 the war between dream and failure ended*lithograph-showing-a-birds-eye-view-of-the-suspension-bridge-to-new-picture-id90741893.jpg
And good news, the Dreamer won!! 💪 the roebling resiliencewon the battle!! 1800s-1880s-men-standing-picture-id604435093.jpg
Today The Brooklyn Bridge stands strong ,tall and mighty, and is outstandingly beautiful. It is widely known today for the best of architectural mindset that was ever laid in history.

Godbless the roebling family *

And yes, now let me surprise you more*
Washington Roebling washington-augustus-roebling-american-civil-engineer-1883-roebling-picture-id463914777.jpgsurvived 43 years later. Living to a reasonable extent, seeing the roebling dream fulfilled.

He gave up the ghost on the 21st July 1926 in New Jersey, U. S. A.

Wow amazing strength from this great legends. There are a lot of lessons to learn from this historical moments and the most important is NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAM!!!!
