Jesus Calms a Storm - God's Word Today & Thoughts to Ponder
(Just a reminder for me again…I wrote this back in January 2015 during our son’s initial hospital admission for his on-going medical condition. And it’s appropriate for me to recall once again as we continue to deal with a flood of problems in 2016.)
God’s Word Today:
Matthew 8:23-27 NCV
Jesus got into a boat, and his followers went with him. A great storm arose on the lake so that waves covered the boat, but Jesus was sleeping. His followers went to him and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We will drown!” Jesus answered, “Why are you afraid? You don’t have enough faith.” Then Jesus got up and gave a command to the wind and the waves, and it became completely calm. The men were amazed and said, “What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Thoughts to Ponder:
Yesterday, while I was driving my daughter early morning to school we had a conversation about talking to Jesus like a friend and not necessarily in a formal prayer form. I told her the importance of this for her to develop a closer relationship with Him, so that when problems in life comes she will always feel secured. I even added, in small and in bigger things she can rely on Him to see her through.
I then narrated again one of her favorite stories in the Bible, Jesus Calms a Storm, emphasizing to her that Jesus, Our Father and the Holy Spirit are all-powerful and nothing in this world or outside of our world is more powerful that God. We both smiled afterwards as I pointed out that God will make all things right, all we need to do is to believe and have faith. She even said the words, “Peace be still.”
Last night, before putting our children both to sleep I shared to them again the same story. As I was about to finish I uttered the words, “Peace be still,” I came to realize of my conversation with my daughter earlier in the day. It was not only meant for her and it was not just another Bible story, but it was a message of assurance by God for me and my wife in the uncertainties we are facing right now especially with our boy’s condition.
It seems like a simple story, and yet it is a powerful story of faith in a very powerful God beyond the dark night, dark angry clouds, loud thunder, terrifying lightning, strong winds, huge tumbling waves and an uncertain future. Through that ordeal Jesus was with them and all they needed was to talk to him like a friend, and then he took over and calmed the storm.
Dear Father,
We thank you for the Holy Spirit’s guidance in letting me recall of how a time of helplessness became a testament of Your supreme power over all things. Guide us more each day to have more than enough faith in You who can make all things right, calm and peaceful in our hearts, minds and lives.
We give to you our concerns Lord. We have heard your voice as you whispered, “Peace be still.”
We thank you, once again, for showing us that you are our best friend.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
