The Master of Wisdom Ben Sira dedicated his book to the study of the most mysterious and excellent science, wisdom. And this is of great importance, all the sapiential books, like the book of Ben Sira, Wisdom or Proverbs, are the prelude to the teachings of the gospels.
And when we talk about this science, the wisdom, we talk about the education of man, because an educated man is a man who fears God and lives wisely. When a society fails it is because the knowledge of the supreme science fails in men.
That's why the master Ben Sira left us an inspirational quote about wisdom to always keep in mind:
"The root of all conduct is the heart;
four branches it shoots forth:
Good and evil, death and life" Ben Sira 37:17-18.
The Bible with its wisdom teaches that man's intentions come from the heart, and the concept of the heart as the place of the deepest thoughts, the intentions, does not come from Greek philosophy but from the Bible, because in ancient times in the medicine it was considered that the heart was the place from which thoughts came.
And to go deeper into this metaphorical idea, of the heart as the origin of intentions, the Book of Proverbs gives us a phrase very similar to the previous one: "As water reflects the face, so one's life reflects the heart.", Proverbs 17:19.
Men can try to hide what they want with masks and appearances, but what is in the heart, good and evil, life and death, the love of God (Agape) or the love of money sooner or later comes to light, this is what the wise men intend to teach to men in the sapiential books. The science of wisdom explains that first of all men must watch their heart, their intentions, as the most important thing; and this has a sense because there is a truth, the reason as a faculty of man always looks at the good. Wisdom always teaches the most excellent but it is up to men to understand it or not.
