"Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much". Helen Keller

One of the most celebrated women of her time and an embodiment of hope and courage to millions of disabled people around the World, she tackled social and political issues, and was an advocate for the improvement in the welfare of the blind people.

"The best and most beautiful things in the World cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart ". Helen Keller

She overcame adversity of being blind and deaf to become one of 20th century's leading humanitarian. Through out the first half of that century, she travelled to 35 countries on five Continents, bringing inspiration and encouragement to millions across the globe.

HELEN KELLER, IMPRESSIVE IN DISABILITY!

Reading about Helen Keller was like an encounter with an angel and I was moved to tears by this 'specialest human', who in her time, was a warm and pulsing lifeline to the World, especially the World of the disabled.

  • Born on the 27th May, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama.
  • In February 1882, when Helen was nineteen months old, she developed a severe congestion of the stomach and brain which eventually left her blind and deaf.
  • Beginning 1887, Keller's teacher, Ann Sullivan, helped her make tremendous progress with her ability to communicate.
  • In 1890, Keller began speech classes at the Horace Mann school for the deaf in Boston. She toiled relentlessly for 25 years to learn to speak so she could be understood by others.
  • In 1896, she attended the Cambridge school for young ladies.
*In 1902, at age 22, she wrote her first book 'The Story Of My Life' which covered her transformation from childhood to a college student.
  • She graduated cum laude from Radcliffe in 1904.
  • In 1915, she co-founded Helen Keller International, an outfit designed to combat the causes and consequences of blindness and malnutrition.
  • In 1920, she helped found the American Civil Liberties Union ACLU.
  • She participated in many campaigns to raise awareness, money and support for the blind.
  • Her beloved teacher and devoted companion, Anne Sullivan, died in 1936.
  • In 1946, she was appointed counsellor of International Relations for the American Foundation Of Overseas Blind.
  • She travelled to 35 countries on five continents.
  • She died in her sleep on June 1, 1968, a few weeks shy of her 88th birthday.

During her remarkable lifetime, she received many honours in recognition of her accomplishments for she became a champion of social issues, helping to improve the welfare of the disabled.
She stands as a powerful example of how determination, hard work and imagination can allow an individual triumph over adversity. She overcame difficult conditions with a great deal of persistence and grew into a respected and World-renowned activist who laboured for the physically challenged.
Indeed her cast is rare and her legacy is rarer. Today history celebrates its very own who had chosen to stand very tall, even in the midst of misfortune

"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved".
Helen Keller

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it".
Helen Keller

Hmmm..... Talk of optimism, of undauntedness, of courage and resolution, you would have in part been able to describe this uniquely unusual woman who came, who saw and who conquered.

"Life is an exciting business, and most exciting when it is lived for others".
Helen Keller

Indeed a remarkable woman who did so much to impact humanity. If her disability could not deter her, then we lack excuses, we must do our bit, our best. Thank you Keller, your legacy lives on.
