--You Must Be Ready For Change--

Change is the only constant thing in life. Yet, even with our tremendous ability to adapt, human beings have a natural tendency to resist change. This is the factor that keeps so many from achieving their personal legends. In fact, it keeps many from wanting to achieve their legends.

In our book, The Alchemist, Santiago the simple shepherd boy had to overcome this not once or thrice, but three times! First, he was reluctant to leave his sheep simply because he had been shepherding for two years already. Then, even after setting out on his journey, he almost stopped halfway as a successful crystal merchant. Finally, after spending just a little time in the oasis, he once again fell into a routine, fell in love, and built a life he didn’t want to change. Only his intense desire to see his dream fulfilled was able to push him further on the journey to his goal.

Change is necessary. It is necessary for growth, and to reach your personal legend, you must grow. Never let your reason for doing or not doing anything be ‘That’s how it has always been’, or ‘that’s what I’m used to’. Watch out also for the splendid array of alibis and excuses that follow these thoughts, and for the ‘voices of reason’ that will urge you not to change the status quo.

Accept change. Embrace it. You might be wrong, yes, but no success is final and no failure fatal. The road to your personal legend will be a treacherous mountainscape, full of ups and downs until its very end.

Also remember, the pursuit of your personal legend will change you. Be ready for that too, and for all the changes you must encounter on the way.
