Failure is much more instructive. Success is much more fun!
I'd say one requires a mixture of each to enjoy a fruitful, productive life. Too much success and some would become lazy and stagnant. Too much failure and some will not wish to continue on.
I think it would be optimal to have brief periods of failure followed by longer ones filled with success. But it's not like we get to choose, now, is it? : )
