The most amazingly colourful moth.
Managed to get a couple of hours working in the garden today and noticed something red in the grass. When I went to have a closer look I was amazed to see this big lad.
As you can see he is quite a size, I moved him out of the way so he would be safe from my lawn mower. No idea what sort of moth he is though.
That's a moth. Are you sure you were worried about it rather than the damage it could do to your lawnmower?
Moths wings are different to butterflies... if I remember correctly, butterflies rest their wings folded straight up from their bodies and moths wings lie flat when at rest.
It's certainly colourful... and very hairy!
On all accounts it's an Elephant Hawk Moth and common in the UK...
First one I've ever seen.
I remember these from the really hot summers we had when I was a kid.
The caterpillars are HUGE
Wonderfull insect, Whether it's a butterfly type
Oh, he's a pretty one!
Very creative . Nice shots
never seen such a moth. I thought they were all grey and annoying but this looks pretty nice.
Also seems to be kind of friendly chilling on your hand.
You named it?
Wow !!
is that a moth? maybe it is butterfly
I'm hoping someone knows what sort it is, I'm guessing that it's a moth rather than a butterfly.
Nice post
Wow, it is so beautiful))))
Yes a beautiful moth (Elephant Hawk-moth (Deilephila elpenor) . I used to get them in my garden when I lived in Scotland. Great photos. Particularly that first one.
