Kindergarten Panopticon

Have you ever been mesmerized by the possibility of going back in time to visit your younger self? What stories you could tell, what advice and cautions you would be able to give about the road ahead. "No, leave that girl alone, she'll break your heart. And forget about befriending those popular guys over there; they'll never become true friends, so don't let them use you."

Kids are like sponges; they absorb information at rates us adults can only dream of. Also much of our personalities and morals are acquired during this time when neural connections are being made in the young "blank slate" mind. "Get them while they're young" is therefore the standard mode of operation for any institution at the top of any power structure. Although this criticism has been aimed at religion, at the Catholic Church mainly here in the west, it could be aimed at any institution.

The way our connectome (the"map" of neural connections in the brain) is built up over years is strongly dependent on all the information processed by it during the times when it is in full development, the first 7 years being especially crucial. Neural connections become stronger when certain information is being offered repeatedly; the lessons we learn over and over again become more difficult to un-learn with each iteration of the information.

_{Get Them While They're Young}

"Get them while they're young" holds true for religion for the obvious reason that people are "born in" to a religion, they're raised with it and confronted with it every day. But think about it; this goes for our capitalist world-view as well. Capitalism is the default state of the human condition for as long as anyone can remember. And just like the information provided by religion doesn't hold up to the requirements of scientific evidence, neither does the information provided by capitalism. You tell me about a world that's ruled like a meritocracy, and I'll show you one in which Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, two of the most successful figureheads of our meritocratic market economy, have stolen the ideas that made them rich. It's a meritocracy alright, but one in which only one skill is rewarded; opportunism. And that's besides demanding an answer to the question "how hard must one work, or how talented must one be to 'earn' the right to exist?"

But I digress; the reason I bring up the magnificent absorbing qualities of the young mind, is five minutes of a father telling us about his trip to Disney World with his wife and two children. Only five minutes and my blood was boiling... Disney has been wronged you see. Apparently there are some cases in which children give their entrance-arm-wrist-bands to their friends or siblings, pass them on among each other, so that one of them doesn't have to pay for a ticket. So the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chip in the wrist-band doesn't suffice any longer; now these 5 and 6 year old kids have to leave their finger prints and bio-metric facial-scans at the admission-booth, so they can access the attractions after passing through three layers of identification...

As part of a new admissions system, Disney theme parks collect fingerprint data from visitors who have tickets — more than 55,000 prints a day.

My son is 20 years old, and I really felt bad for him during his high-school years. When I was young, I got to experiment with challenging the authorities, even with the simple act of cutting class without parents or school ever noticing it, by cleverly covering both sides with appropriate excuses (lies really, excuses just sounds better...). Nowadays parents get access to an online app, and they can see at any time if their kid was absent that day; my son will never fool me. Which is a good thing, right? Wrong. We're normalizing the panopticon state, the big brother world-empire ruled by multinational corporations and their puppet-regimes, by getting them while they're young.
