I think it was Mancur Olson that wrote "The first man who fomented an organized capacity for violence was the true founder of civilization." In contrast to Rousseau's exclaiming that it was the "first man having enclosed a piece of ground." I argued, on the other hand that it was the first man who learned to use symbols and signs to manipulate his fellow's superstitions... now that is supernatural power- the requisite for secret societies.
Yes, power over the minds of others is best done through the mind control of word "magic" (symbols). That's the real old magic ;)
If I'm not mistaken Magick means "things that are hidden."
