RE: Something needs to be done

Well, I own guns so fuck you on that point and fuck you on wanting to take away my ability to protect my family. You do realize not a single universal background check would have prevented these shootings. You don't even know how many people are saved by guns a year, do you? Fuck you don't even know how many are killed by them! You’re just a self righteous blowhard!

So how many times did you protect your family with guns so far?

You do realize not a single universal background check would have prevented these shootings.
Now I'm seriously puzzled what do you mean by a "universal background check", because I'm pretty sure these could prevent at least a few shootings. Afaik even in one of those three recent cases it was generally known that the guy was not ok, but there was absolutely nothing to stop him from buying a gun anyway.

It would also be nice to check whether people store their guns in appropriate conditions, so that for example their angsty teenager can't steal one and do something stupid.

Fuck you don't even know how many are killed by them!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like roughly 10 000 intentional murders total per year, so 30 per million per year
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr68/nvsr68_09-508.pdf (especially page 51)
Or 15 000 not necessarily intentional homicides, over 20 000 suicides, together with other cases 40 000 total.

Which also links back to the first part; with anxiety, unipolar and bipolar you might as well be more likely to kill yourself with your own gun rather than be killed because of not having one.

You don't even know how many people are saved by guns a year, do you?
And back to the stats, that would imply that about 5 000 firearm homicides per year are not murder, so at the very best that's 5 000 kills in self defence as opposed to 10 000 murders. Feel free to link any other, relevant statistics, though.

Universal background checks wouldn't have prevented a single shooting, all shooters obtained their guns legally so they went through the background checks and waiting periods. Even CNN stated as much yesterday. An actually it’s more like 1.5 million lives saved annually through the defensive use of guns. And fuck your mother on me killing myself, what a shitty thing to say. I've been seeking treatment for the last 20 years for my illness. Also, the vast majority of mentally ill people are non violent dick for brains!

If the background checks in question are already there, but even you have your guns anyway, then what is your problem with them? If they are not there yet, how were they supposed to stop the shooters? You're pretty much stating that a regulation doesn't work properly because it's too weak to have a real effect/not there at all and use it as an argument why it shouldn't be given more power/introduced.

It's like arguing that it's not worth to turn on a turned off light bulb because it's dark in the room, so the light bulb clearly isn't working.

Sure, but the risk of violence or suicide is still increased as compared to general population. Let's stick to mood disorders for now and see for example https://www.hhs.gov/answers/mental-health-and-substance-abuse/does-depression-increase-risk-of-suicide/index.html
it is estimated that about 60 percent of people who commit suicide have had a mood disorder
By doing a general screening to find relatively few people with mood disorders (let's say 10% of the general population) and then giving them more attention you can give more attention to about 60% of people who commit suicide. By screening more thoroughly 10% of people you can screen more thoroughly 60% of a group that is significantly more likely to harm themselves with a gun. To me it sounds like a good idea.
