By and large, commercial organizations are driven by profit and in many countries these organization do have political clout too. They, therefore, drive the narrative in many endeavors, purportedly for the benefit of the individuals and their liberty, but the reality is usually something else.

Unless and until their endeavors are vetted and approved by independent NGO representing the interest of the individual users of the internet, their actions must always be viewed with suspicion.

Unfortunately there is also a general apathy among the internet users to issues like these. They tend to support any project as long as they see some benefit in it for them regardless of its long-term effects or the hidden objectives of its promoters.
