Ranking FAANGs - Worst to Best from InformationWar perspective

in #informationwar6 years ago

The investor term FAANGs stands for Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google.

Sometimes all these companies are lumped together by us @informationwar types for their censorship of conservative, crypto & libertarian opinions but I think its important to distinguish between them as they are not all the same.

Here is my ranking worst to best.

1) Facebook
Absolutely the worst.
Its entire business model is based on selling or otherwise monetising users' private data.
It is the worst censor and leader of the censors.
Plus its core platforms (Facebook, Instagram) are a complete waste of time and are pernicious to real relationships.
They also cause children to sexualise themselves online. I am sick of seeing children aged 10-16 posing in public places like prostitutes for Instagram or Facebook pics.

2) Google
Google is second worst, as its entire business model is based on selling or otherwise monetising users' private data. It is also one of the worst censors (including via Youtube).
However it does have a some redeeming features in that many of its services (eg maps, translate) are both useful and best in class. However this makes them even harder to get away from.

3) Amazon
Amazon's direct involvement in censorship is slight.
They did remove some endorsements of Alex Jones products on their site but the products are still available for sale.
The larger problem is that Amazon is scarily dominant and causing damage to main street shops and malls which have an important social function.
Its owner Bezos is also a leader of the MSM fake news via ownership of The Washington Post.

4) Apple
Apple were certainly a leader of the censorship of Alex Jones but otherwise are far less problematic.
They make most of their money by selling real, high quality, physical products in a competitive marketplace where they always have to innovate to stay ahead.
They do not make money by monetising other people's work without compensation. One can argue about the cut the iTunes & App Stores take, but its just a distributor commission.

5) Netflix
Netflix were not involved in censoring Alex Jones or Crypto and actually pay for their content, as well as commissioning their own quality content. They do not make money by monetising other people's work without compensation or spying.
They also have a lot of competition and are not so dominant that they misuse their market power.
Netflix is much smaller than the other FAANGs by market cap.
I think it was just included because the liberal media would have found FAAGs politically incorrect. :-)
