New study shows that you have probably been drinking a lot of plastic

in #informationwar6 years ago

A university in New York recently released a study that shows that most bottled water is contaminated with significant amounts of plastic.

They tested 259 individual bottles 11 brands purchased from 19 locations in 9 countries. They found that 93% of bottled water showed some sign of microplastic contamination. They found an average of 10.4 microplastic particles >100 um per liter of bottled water. So that was ten particles about the width of a human hair. 17 of the bottles they tested came up clear according to their test but one had 10,000 particles of plastic within the size range they tested.

They found twice as much as within their previous study on tap water. Including smaller particles (6.5–100 um), average of 325 microplastic particles per liter. For particles > 100 um: Fragments were the most common morphology (66%) followed by fibers. Polypropylene was the most common plastic (54%) they found in the water. This plastic matched a common plastic used for the bottle caps. Data suggests contamination is at least partially coming from the packaging and/or the bottling process itself.

I have always been suspect of bottled water, always tastes like plastic to me, I use a "Pur" faucet mount filter and a ceramic mug or Nalgene bottle most of the time but occasionally I will have to drink bottled water, now I will be even more skeezed out.

Here are the brands they tested around the world, they sampled many lots from different locations for each brand:

Aquafina, Dasani, Evian, Nestle Pure Life, and San Pellegrino. Leading national brands included Aqua (Indonesia), Bisleri (India), Epura (Mexico), Gerolsteiner (Germany), Minalba (Brazil), and Wahaha (China).

So do you drink bottled water? What about preppers, are you storing bottled water? What do you think about both tap and bottled water being contaminated with plastics?

it will be interesting to see the long term effects of this. They link a lot of alztimers cases to having high aluminum content in the brain, well what has the last generation been drinking out of their whole lives? What will the plastic do to our bodies and minds?

That's the problem exactly, no one really knows. But don't stress out about it too much, my grandmother lived most of her life in close proximity to oil refineries, my grandfather worked for an oil company most of his life, and she just passed away one day shy of 100 years old. Never had a significant medical problem in her life.

Hola amigo.

This is ver interesting! I had no idea that this was the case and now makes me think about all the different water bottles I use! It will be interesting to see if companies will change the way they are treating the plastic or just making water bottles from a different material.

Thank you for sharing!

when evidence of a particular chemical becomes undeniable in court they will remove only that chemical and then continue to sell the rest. Like they removed bisphenol A from some products but continue to use bisphenol B.

Some people speculate that plastics may be at the rise of colon cancers in young people, studies have shown that more than ninety percent of adults tested have tested positive for plastics in their blood and urine and there' been considerable alarm raised upon the effects of those plastics on the brain and the possible brain development of infants.

Great article, @funbobby51! I personally drink tap water as it's "normal" in my country - Lithuania. What about you? We might become more "plastic" someday I guess ;) I wonder how we will mutate in the near future.

Followed, upvoted, resteemed. You deserved for this one! Keep up, mate.

Thanks for the support!
I drink tap water but I filter it but the filter is plastic so now I wonder how much plastic that is kicking off. In some ways we are plastic already, not really plastic as that is made of oil but about half of human tissue on earth is made from artificially sourced nitrogen made from the byproduct of oil production, natural gas.
