The Spectrum of Slavery
Slavery was pretty fucked up, so the men in suits designed a system far more palatable for the general population.
Now, there are all different shades of slavery, from work in the sweatshops to middle management.
We often gauge success and even intelligence from the pure speculation of how much money someone has. Billionaires are often falsely touted as geniuses instead of being exposed as the lucky cutthroats that they really are. There are plenty of geniuses out there that have and will continue to be dirt-poor.
To think that we've created a system that allows people to rise up from their station is a fantasy; it is the ultimate lottery. The bottom of the pyramid will always be there, no matter who climbs the ranks of the corporate ladder. There's also the issue of technically smart individuals having very poor networking skills. Very talented people get exploited via being forced to trade their time for money into a product that they will never see royalties on.
Cage-Free, amirite?
You know, some people are worried about those 17 odd billion animals we are torturing and killing in factory farms every year. However, what many fail to realize is that humans themselves are being farmed as well.
Billions of them. All of them running on their little hamster wheel trying to get ahead in a system that's been rigged since before they were born. How marvelous.
Enslaved by tribalism
This entire system makes everyone in it less than they could be. The billionaires look down from the top of the pyramid and think they've won the game. Everything is relative, so because the people at the top have more than the people farther down it's seen as some kind of victory. Metaphorically, we seem to be content making pyramids on the ground when we could be flying around in spaceships.
Humanity could be so much more. On the flip side, I think we have to acknowledge that without the system we've come up with (a few in charge of the many) we could be even worse off. No one can do anything alone. We all rely on this network for the most part. In the end it really comes down to governance. Are we on the verge of vastly upgrading the way citizens are controlled? There's certainly an argument to be made that our survival as a species depends on it.
Conclusion
People don't like being overtly controlled. The art of manipulating the general population without their knowledge or consent has become quite the art-form. Will humanity ever awaken to see the invisible chains they've been shackled by? Maybe... but it seems far more likely that the spectrums we're creating will just grow wider and become even more blurred.
So many great quotes through the series :)
Slavery is a spectrum, no doubt. We do not see people in chains working for free, but we see people in debt dancing to the tune of the creditors. We see employment and its draconian rules in exchange for a salary. We the double standard in justice. We see human trafficking, drug addiction, indoctrination disguised as education. The topic is complex.
Yes we do, here in America, legally. The Thirteenth Amendment, which many suppose to have made slavery illegal in the USA, did not make it illegal at all. Read it. I have seen slaves in America kept in cages working for free.
There are more of them today than there were before the Civil War.
It's more evident now, at least in my opinion, with the advent of social media. Big companies are constantly trying to control everything but now controlling people by putting them into echo chambers it's getting worse. Lots in the various truth movements don't get much headway into the hamsters wheel peoples lives. Everyone is focused on ridiculous sport, celebrity or movie crap.
That being said we have come a long way that can break the chains, they are just wrapping them tighter and tighter around us. Something will snap but will that snap be manipulated is the question
I often wonder if mankind is just slowly becoming more free.
As each person is able to do a bit more and accept a bit more freedom.
You pointed to it, but didn't go into much detail, that without the "wealthy" factory owners, there aren't many people who could make a factory.
A dozen factory workers, although they might know each step in assembly, can't create a factory. The organizational structure is beyond their ken. The acquiring of all the parts beyond their ability.
So, the dozen factory workers... by themselves, would never make a factory.
And although i wish for garage sized factories, i find that there are few that can run them. Even 3D printing, which any 5th grader can run, is beyond many.
You are wrong about slavery being a thing of the past. Read the 13th Amendment. There are more slaves in the USA today - legally - than there were in the Eighteenth Century. Slavery continues to be a brutal system, and as far as I can tell, it will continue to be a peculiar American institution.
There is a major change coming in governance, though. Technology is changing how we are able to make the goods and services we depend on for high quality of life, which has heretofore been dependent on parasitized pools of capital.
That's no longer true, right now. As 3D printing develops, and myriad other decentralized, distributed technologies continue to advance, the necessity of a class of vampires will decrease commensurately, and most particularly in terms of security.
Freedom beckons from our future.

Wow.
Speak the truth from the highest mountain and hopefully the people will hear.
Wage slavery is where we are at. Nothing more or less, Miss work s few weeks and you get ground into the dirt. True freedom is only achieved by casting off the shackles of wage slavery. Financial independence is the closest thing to freedom we will ever see.

Well sir, my daddy is a hard worker. He worked 2 jobs to feed our family. He was loved at work and loved by everyone. He would come home tired and tried to give us the life he never had.
No, i want to be his Boss.
