Rare earths are used in computers, tv screens, they are in the components that make cell phones vibrate... and they use 10's of 1000s of tons to generate wind power, for the magnets windmills require to function. The extraction of rare earths causes additional ecological plagues, as if we didn't have enough of them already. Rare earths are also used for light bulbs. But wait, there is more, if you think that you are saving the planet, well sorry, rare earths are also needed for hybrid and electric cars' batteries.

How about buying less electronics in the first place at the consumer level and spend more time traveling instead?

Pro-monetarists want to live in a society where everything is readily accessible, can be bought on the sport....but this is a total delusion as we now can see again. Earth cannot provide for everybody's egotic consumption. It is time to imagine a new society where public transportation are improved greatly so people do not need 3 or 4 cars per household.

People can also learn to carpool for example. Or share cars with neighbors. Mining has always been highly detrimental to the environment. All mining, and this means that man must collaborate with Earth to avoid the destruction of his habitat. Nature herself controls our consumption. It is better to wait 6 months (because supply and demand must be balanced at the production level to avoid waste) to get the best plasma TV available than getting it right away and contributing to an unsustainable market and fueling obsolescence.
