Politically Correct - The After Show : Is Flag Burning Free Speech?

Is Flag Burning Really Free Speech?

Why is it a “hate crime” to burn a gay pride flag, but it’s “free speech” to burn the American flag?

After the 2016 election Trump tweeted: “Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag — if they do, there must be consequences — perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!”

Yet the Supreme Court declared in 1969 that flag burning was constitutionally-protected free speech.

President Trump is “all in” for a constitutional amendment banning desecration of the American flag, he said in an early morning tweet on Saturday.

Congress voted at least half a dozen times on a flag-burning amendment between 1995 and 2006 but never got the two-thirds support needed in the Senate. The closest it came was in 2006, when it fell one vote shy.

What should be done to people that burn our American Flag?

Live and let live, I hear some folks say.

They should move to a country they don't hate, is what I say.

I fought for the flag, my friends died for it. If I saw someone burning it I can't say I wouldn't get violent. But from the comfort of my house in the woods, I don't care what dirty stinking hippies do in their free time. If they start a forest fire then yeah bog problems

From your house in the woods, if some flag burner started up something near you, you could easily claim your actions were in self-defense of your family and home.

I wouldn't make it illegal to burn the American flag; I'd just make sure there was a 50 cent fine for those that assaulted flag-burners ;>

We were looking at the other aspects.
Like, no permit to burn, possibly causing a forest fire, endangering others....
