A modernized slavery

Day by day in Venezuela, do your mind put you thoughts that possibly in this century is difficult to think !, It will be possible that all this economic problem that crosses the country is coldly calculated to keep the Venezuelans in a slavery hidden by a mediocre management Economy of President Nicolas Maduro ?.

It is difficult but not preposterous, to keep a population segregated to economic aid and crumbs of food, in opposition to promoting the work and wealth of a country full of opportunities, that ocaciona maintain a people with hunger and need for my thinking only creates a state of absolute dependence towards the executors of the power that in this case is the Venezuelan Revolution of Maduro.

Recall a bit

The practices that had been abolished, mainly between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, have reappeared under different modalities, in no less than 50 countries distributed on four continents. We must remember here, even if only in a superficial way, that ending slavery, as happened in the United States, cost a lot of blood. The place that today occupy in the history of the world Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela, is directly related to his struggles against slavery.

For a long time, scholars of societies considered that slavery had lost all legitimacy. Although it was maintained in some parts of the world-basically in Africa-it no longer had defenders. There are historians who, during the 19th century, referred to the 20th century as the era of "post slavery". The prevailing idea was that there would no longer be an asymmetry, according to which one person could own others. In the constitutions of countries, explicitly or implicitly, it has become clear that the appropriation of individuals is simply unacceptable. In the substantive, human rights constitute the negation of slavery.

A new concept of slavery.

Towards the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, slavery has managed to reinvent itself in so many different ways, that the definition of modern slavery refers to a set of phenomena, which have in common a serious situation of exploitation, which prevents people can be freed from it: threatened with death, blackmailed, deceived or subjected to the most violent and diverse mechanisms of domination.

In most cases, new forms of slavery are related to poverty. The promoters of slavery act to take advantage, at minimum cost, of the weaknesses that are inherent in poverty: the desperate need to find some form of sustenance. Making use of violence or deception very well contrived, they recruit people who, in their majority, come from the strata where the shortages are more widespread and the hunger more frequent.

There are small industries, in no less than about twelve countries, that hire extremely poor people, who work in subhuman conditions, for 18 hours a day, in exchange for a precarious diet and a sleeping mat, in the workshop itself. places, armed men, ready to shoot, prevent any protest or the possible escape of workers.

It is the same as what happens with the prostitution networks that have multiplied in Europe: there are thousands of women who, coming from Latin America or Eastern Europe, have been transferred under duress and forcibly prostituted. The one who tries to escape, is persecuted and killed. Or it is kept under the threat that they will kill children or relatives who have stayed in their countries of origin.

There are enslaved children who have been forced to participate in armed conflicts in Central Africa, or who have been recruited using force, by narcotrafficking guerrillas such as the FARC and the ELN. There are kidnappers, child soldiers, active children in bands that kill themselves for control of the streets where drugs are distributed.

These are all cases that occur around the world

We are right in the rest of the world but in Venezuela a type of slavery is generated by hunger and needs. The population is not at all happy with the management of Maduro but are more the shortcomings than the desire to fight for a country, fight to leave a regime, to leave the needs as such. I can assure you that very little Venezuelans have this thought of some kind of slavery inside Venezuela, it is more they ignore the fact that this can happen.

Venezuela, whose presence in the reports of labor slavery was of little relevance, in a few years it has become the country that leads, along with Haiti, the painful ranking of modern slavery in Latin America. In the report that the Walk Free Foundation presented to the United Nations a couple of weeks ago, under the name of Global Index of Slavery 2018, it is indicated that, under the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro, the rate reached is 5.6 per thousand inhabitants , which means that right now, more than 170 thousand Venezuelans are suffering from different forms of slavery.

News should surprise us only to a point. In many of the information that is published - cases of prostitution networks of children and women; children who work in garbage dumps in different parts of our territory; children who are forced to comply with long hours in begging networks; workers who perform strenuous days in exchange for a precarious plate of food; young men and women who are now prostituting themselves in exchange for a little money they can take home, is present, as a substratum of substance, slavery.

In the Venezuelan case, the reality is unequivocal: the rise of slavery is directly related to the vertiginous impoverishment of the country. This, unfortunately, leads us to another hypothesis: these indicators could add more Venezuelans to suffer these relations of extreme exploitation. The claim that the Maduro dictatorship is a factory of poverty is now insufficient. It must be said: it is a fast and insatiable operation that multiplies and deepens, minute by minute, poverty and slavery.
