What's Wrong with the Saudi Air Defense System? Should they Replace it with S400 Instead?
The Yemeni drone attacks that destroyed Saudi's, and the world's largest oil refinery, have proved beyond any doubt that a determined people can cause maximum pain to a bully, that aside, there's an issue with the air defense system.
A member of Quora asked: Do the Saudi Arabia drone attacks indicate flaws in Saudi Arabia's air defenses, or demonstrate how difficult it is to defend against drones?
My answer to him there addresses this particular issue, here's my full answer:
Both, first of all it’s difficult to completely ward off a drone attack since their image on radars is very small, second, the Saudi air defenses are very bad.
One US analyst, supposed to be a strategist as per the media channel that presented him, tried to justify that Saudi Arabia is a large country and they cannot spread the air defense systems all over the country.
The problem with his analysis is that the target was Saudi’s main refineries processing more than half of the oil produced by the kingdom, and if there’s any site that should be heavily guarded with all sorts of protection is this particular site, more important than the king’s wives palaces if you ask me.
Second, the Yemeni Armed Forces have repetitively warned they’ll be attacking Saudi’s economic targets of high value and they have a precedent earlier this year when they bombed the East - West oil pipeline that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz and delivers oil to Yanbu port on the Red Sea. The source of this mega pipeline is from the same refinery that was targeted by the Yemeni Armed Forces.
Maybe the Saudis should seriously consider buying Russian S400 system and scarp the US useless Patriot air defense systems.
