We never claimed Syria is the Virtuous Land, we do have corrupt officials, like every other country in thy world, at least ours is very less scale, it was never a state policy like in the USA or Israel or any US main ally in the region Saudis for instance, and during the first days of the current crisis Syria started to flush out all those corrupt officials, almost all of them 'defected' to the West, how about that?
And BTW, two things you might not know: if any person was ever tortured once released they could easily file a police case against the person who tortured them and that person, whoever he was, will get punished. Police cases could never be unregistered and military courts were very effective. I personally witnessed a couple of such cases that one of them even included compensations to the tortured, and that was around 1997, FYI.
Second thing, at the first judge seen, the investigation judge, if there was any torture involved, including verbal threats, the judge will automatically dismiss all the confessions made prior to reach him. This made investigators' appetite to torture much less by the time.
And since you're quoting the CIA, imagine what type of person the CIA would hand over to one of its main foes in the region for alleged torture who also must be a threat for the Syrian State as well. Keep in mind that all of those who stood against the US policies in the region and worldwide sought refuge in Syria, including Nelson Mandela's party during the days of apartheid where it had only one office abroad in Damascus. At the same time guess the USA was on whose side in South Africa?

I support Assad as he's leading a not super country and which has been under siege and attacks by everybody else, literally, throughout its history.
I'm very much familiar with some of those around Putin, even some of his own advisors and top generals spoke against them, one guy in Russia Today even called them traitors. What concerns us in the Russian policies is what concerns us directly as Syrians.
