* A researcher at the National Cancer Institute believes that smoking can prevent the development of skin cancer that affects mainly the elderly in the Mediterranean, the regions of Southern Italy, Greece and Israel.

• Not that smoking is recommended for that population, says Dr James Goedert, but the important thing is tobacco smoking can help to prevent rare forms of cancer. And this is a recognition from researchers at the National Cancer Institute that there are benefits from smoking.
  Goedert who joined the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) said that he would not recommend smoking, even to members of the population who have been studied.
  "This study shows that smoking produces a lower risk of rare and potentially fatal disease," he concluded.

* A new study in the journal of the National Cancer Institute (May 20, 1998) reported that carriers of certain gene mutations (which tend to be carriers of breast cancer). If a woman smokes up to 4 pack years, the reduction is 35 percent, for 4 packs or more per year, the reduction is 54 percent, "said Jean-Sebastien Brunet, a study leader published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

• Who smoked for more than 20 packs per year (ie, the number of packs per day multiplied by the number of years of smoking) according to statistics apparently decreased significantly by 54 percent in incidences of breast cancer when compared to carriers who never smoked. One of the strengths of this study is that the decrease in incidents exceeds the 50 percent threshold.
