Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee died in New Delhi today. He was 93 years old.

Vajpayee was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on June 11 with kidney infection, chest congestion, urinary tract infection and low urine output. image

The 93-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, a diabetic, had one functional kidney. He had suffered a stroke in 2009 that weakened his cognitive abilities. Subsequently, he developed dementia.

Since Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and many other leaders visited the former prime minister.

The BJP stalwart, who has been a Parliamentarian for over four decades, was among the founding members of the party.

Vajpayee was awarded the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna by the Narendra Modi-led government on March 27, 2015. Apart from Bharat Ratna, Vajpayee was conferred the Padma Vibhushan Award in 1992 and the Best Parliamentarian Award in 1994.

His sincerity and commitment towards his work is known not only in the political circles but among the populace of the country. Vajpayees birth date, December 25, was named Good Governance Day in 2015.
