INDIAN MEAT INDUSTRY

Meat production is estimated at 6.3 million tones standing 5th in rank of world's meat production and accounts for 3% of the total world meat production of 220 million tonnes. Buffaloes in India contribute about 31% of total meat production.More than 70% of the Indian population is non-vegetarian. The per capita meat consumption in India every year is around 5.2kg. Chicken and fish have the highest consumption rate. The consumption of poultry meat in India was over 3.9 million metric tons in 2020.

The major item of export is de-boned frozen buffalo meat which accounts for 97 per cent of the total meat export. The major markets for Indian buffalo meat are Malaysia and Egypt while for sheep meat and goat meat, the markets are UAE, Iran, and Jordan. India also exports a small quantity of processed meat to Thailand, Yemen, and Japan and some poultry products to Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and Qatar.

There are mainly twelve distinct components of meat and meat byproducts industry

1.Trade in live animals — buffaloes, sheep, goats, pigs,poultrty,bullock

  1. Slaughtering the animals for retail domestic market;

  2. Slaughtering in municipal abattoirs for both domestic and export markets

4.Slaughtering in integrated mechanized abattoirs (Export Oriented Units) for export:

  1. Transportation services for fresh frozen meat in refrigerated containers from the point of production to the ports for export;

6, Marketing of raw and wet blue hides and skins;

  1. Marketing of bones for further processing into gelatinr ossein, di-calcium phosphate etc.

  2. Production of casings from the intestines;

9, Production of souvenirs from horns and hooves;

1 0, Marketing of blood for the production of pharmaceuticals from mechanized slaughter houses;

1 1 . Production of meat-cum-bone meal and tallow in the rendering plants from offals and bones;

1 2. Production of pet foods
