A group of Maoist insurgent police commandos came under attack on the banks of a river in Gadchiroli district on the outskirts of Maharashtra and neighboring Chhattisgarh state, on Thursday, police said.

Here, 16 Maoist insurgents were killed by men and women. Police said that they were shot while fleeing an unknown number of rebel rivers.

The police later killed the six Maoist insurgents in the same district on Monday evening after the incident. Four of the dead were women rebels.

The bodies of the rebels who were killed in the river Indravati began to float from the day after Sunday's incident. Police on Tuesday recovered the body that was flowing in the river.

Maharashtra Police Director General Satish Mathur told Reuters that the total number of deaths has risen to 34, but it could increase further.

Gadchiroli District Police spokesman Prashant Dwivedi said, "The bodies are still found in the river, and the number of dead people seems to be rising even as the rescue operation continues."

Last month, nine policemen were killed in a Maoist bomb blast in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh.

India's Interior Ministry said that more than 5,500 people were killed in the Maoist insurgency since the beginning of March 2009 till the end of March this year.
