Chandrasekhar Azad popularly known as Azad(Freedom) was born as Chandrasekhar Tiwari in 23 July 1906 at Bhavra village in present day Madhya Pradesh. His parents were Sitaram Tiwari and Jagrani Devi Tiwari.

His mother wanted him to become a Sanskrit scholar. So he was joined to Lathi Vidyapeeth, Banaras to study. In 1921, when Gandhiji launched the Non-Cooperation Movement, Azad a 15-year old boy joined the movement and he was arrested by the Police.

When Chandrasekhar was produced before a magistrate, he gave his name as "Azad", his father's name as "Swathantra"(Independence) and his residence as "Jail".After this he was given a punishment of 'Five lashes'. At every stroke he shouted "Hindustan Zindabad". After this incident he was called by name "Chandrasekhar Azad" that means a Free Man. On this day only he promised himself that "He will not be Captured by the British"

Revolutionary Activities:

After suspension of Non-Cooperation Movement by Gandhiji in 1922 after Chaura Chauri Incident, Azad became more aggressive. He met Ram Prasad Bismil who had formed Hindustan Republic Associationn(HRA), a Revolutionary organisation to libarate India from British dominance.

Bismil was impressed by Azad when he did not removed his hand over the lamp even his hand was burnt. After that Azad became an active member of the HRA and raised funds for the organization. Raising of funds was mainly by looting the British Government Treasury, Trains or Offices.

Azad was involved in the Kokori Train Robbery along with Ram Prasad Bismil in 1925. He was also involved in the Lahore Conspiracy Case involving Killing of ASP John P.Saunders along with Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Rajguru.

Azad was one of the iconic members of Revolutionary Movement. He was one of the well educated in English, Sanskrit and Hindi. He knew how to drive a car. He was one of the finest users of weapons. He used to train other members of HSRA. He wanted to form an independent India on the principles of Socialism.

Death Is Azad:

After the killing of Saunders, Azad had escaped to Jhansi and lived in disguise. But the were able to get hold one of the member of HSRA who leaked their secrets to the British Police.

Police were able to hatch a plan to kill Azad by sending the member of HSRA to him. On 27 February 1931, Azad died fighting the British Police at Alfred Park in Allahabad while he was able to kill three policemen and wound some others. After some time, he found himself outnumbered. He shot himself keeping his pledge of never being captured alive.
