Will survive an unmanned vehicle on the crazy Indian roads? If so, it will make them smarter
It is no secret that technogiant like Tesla, Uber and Google have made great strides in working on Autonomous cars. But few people know that technologies is driving seriously interested in some Indian companies.
So, the local IT Corporation, Infosys has been teaching these technologies, their engineers. And the Indian automaker Tata Motors is being prepared to test their unmanned cars on the streets of Bengaluru, has appealed to the authorities for appropriate permission.
However, working on unmanned aerial vehicle technologies in India will be much more difficult than in the U.S. or Europe, according to Quartz. And the reason for that is world famous for Indian traffic.
It may seem that on the roads of India is going crazy. Cars, people and even cows are moving in all directions simultaneously, accompanying himself loud signals, shouting and bellowing. How could artificial intelligence make your way through this chaos?
I can believe the Indians. Just need to help computers to adapt to local specifics and to teach them the unwritten rules, which drive the Indian drivers.
Let's move briefly to another continent, to America, where the University of Michigan had built for unmanned vehicles real test campus area of 30 acres (a little more than 12 hectares). The robots-drivers learn to recognize road markings and signs, react to other cars and pedestrians and even change the style of riding depending on the road surface.
Run an unmanned vehicle in such town, the University is already planning to go further: to the middle of next year the campus will operate a standalone bus.
This example could be followed by India. First, an unmanned vehicle could explore local style of riding on quiet roads University campuses or business parks. Then the robots could "drive" of garbage trucks and other municipal vehicles, which usually move on standard routes and in these hours when the road is almost no one. And then Autonomous driving is possible to equip the usual car – in case of emergency, artificial intelligence could take control of the person.
With such a step-by-step models of Indian road chaos will not be a problem. On the contrary, gradually sinking into its depths, the robots will learn how to react in different situations – auto rickshaw racing across the path or out on the road, the cow will not be the cause of the accident.
And who knows, maybe this experience will be the main trump card of the Indian systems of Autonomous driving in the struggle for the world market.
