Traditional Indian games we played when we were kids

Hi Steemians,

These are the games which we enjoyed a lot in our childhood:

Lagori :
A game where a stack of flat stones are pilled up and one team tries to break the pile by throwing a ball. When the pile is fallen, the team members have to collect the fallen stones and pile up again. The other team meanwhile throws the ball on opposing team members. The members who have been hit with a ball gets out.

Kancha or Marbles :
This is the most popular game. The motive of the game is to collect as many marbles as you can by shooting with your marble. A player has to shoot at marbles in a circle.

Gilli Danda :
This is another most popular game. This game is played with one smaller stick(Gilli) and other large stick(Danda). The danda is used to hit on Gilli which is kept inclined on a stone. The Gilli flips in the air when hit by a Danda. As soon as the Gilli is in the air, the Danda is hit again on Gilli to strike as far as possible.

Bhawra or Lattoo :
This game is all about spinning a wooden top just for fun.

Langdi :
This game consists of 2 teams. One team will attack and another will defend. The rule is that attacker has to hop on one leg and tag as many members of another team. The team which tags highest members wins.

Dongar Paani or Oonch Neech :
Oonch Neech is a game where an uneven surface or even stairs could work for this game to be played. The higher(Oonch) and lower(Neech) surfaces where players have to quickly move from lower to higher and vice-versa. The denner chooses one of the 2 surfaces and others have to move from the chosen surface. If anyone doesn't move then the denner tags the person and he/she becomes the denner.

Khamb Khamb :
A place where there have to be many poles or similar thing. Children switch between the poles and cling on to it. The denner has to grasp some pole while other players are switching. Here is a link to some kids playing this game -

Sakali-Sakali (Chain-Chain) :

It's a very simple game where a denner have to catch other players. As soon as he/she tags one player, the player becomes part of the chain and hold hands of the denner and catches remaining players. The chain gets bigger as players get tagged.

Aaba Doobi or Maram Pitthi:
A game similar to dodgeball where a team hits other players with a ball(mostly sponge) by passing between players of the same team.

Kanda-Fodi :
This is a very interesting game where a player has to jump across another player. It starts with simple parts like leg, hand and gets more and more difficult as the height to jump get higher.

Statue-Statue :
The name might give you the whole idea of a game. This game is played by players who need to act a particular situation and when the denner calls 'statue'. The players have to freeze in whichever position they are until the denner calls 'stop' or 'ease'. The player who fails to be a statue or moves is called out.

Ice-spies:
A game of hide and seek with some added rule. The denner has to start counting from a certain place and starts finding hidden players and as soon as he finds a player, denner has to run back to the counting place and say ice-spies by touching the wall. Other players can save themselves by going to the counting place when denner is not around and say ice-spies for themselves. It is like they get an extra life or another chance to hide.

Cherishing all the childhood memories. Awesome childhood.
I recently read read a phrase which I loved. It says 'boredom often strikes creativity'. I'm sure whoever invented these innovative games has gone through a lot of boredom.

Sounds right.
We wouldn't have any awesome memories without these games.
My personal favourite was kancha. I would feel rich whenver i win other kanchas(marbles) :)

Very nice post. Your games are similar to Venezuelan popular games (before massive use of computer). we use different names and could be different rules, but bassical they are similar.
Have a nice day!

Best games before computer era.
Thank you :)
