THE GAMBIA
West African leaders gave Yahya Jammeh a final opportunity until noon today to relinquish power after Senegalese troops entered the country on Thursday. Troops have been told to halt their advance until the deadline passes, whereafter they will force him out of office.

The Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) is acting in support of Adama Barrow, who was sworn in as the new Gambian president on Thursday. His legitimacy as president, after winning last month's election, has been recognised internationally.

Streets in the capital city of Banjul and Serrekunda -- The Gambia’s largest city -- were largely deserted on Thursday with commercial establishments including banks, shops and gas stations closed in the capital.

It is recommended that all but essential travel to The Gambia is avoided.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of protesters to Washington, D.C., on 20-21 January 2017. The National Park Service stated that it has received at least 20 protest permit requests; several groups are planning demonstrations around the National Mall and near the inauguration parade route.

Although the exact number of participants is unknown, social media event pages for two of the largest events indicate that at least 14,000 people will attend the rallies on 20 January. Other protest organisers with pending permit requests estimate a turnout of more than 20,000 people. Demonstrators in support of Trump have also secured permits, inviting the potential for minor clashes.

On 21 January, the Women’s March on Washington is expected to draw approximately 200,000 people, which would be the largest inauguration-related rally in history. Protests are also scheduled to take place in various large cities across the U.S.; travellers should take caution and plan accordingly.
