How impostor syndrome can impact your career and personal life?

Someone with impostor syndrome may miss out on some amazing opportunities and projects due to the fear of getting distracted from producing high-quality work as part of their other tasks.

It can take a toll on your mental health due to increased levels of anxiety and a lack of self-confidence.

Stop thinking like an impostor

You’re not alone

Recognise that there is a name for this feeling and you’re not alone in it. Try opening up about it, it will make you feel better to get it off your chest and you might even find that those around you have experienced the same thing and overcome it.

Separate feelings from fact

Remember all the great things you have achieved to get you to where you are today. Make a list in the notes section of your phone if you have to and go back to it every time you need a little reminder of how far you’ve come.

Accept that perfectionism is impossible

Being a perfectionist doesn’t have to be a bad thing, if anything it tells you how deeply you care about the quality of your work. There will come a time where you make a mistake or two, we all do it’s all part of being human so it’s important that you forgive yourself.

Switch the script

Be aware of the situations that trigger your impostor feelings, giving you the power to switch the script. Instead of having the thought “I don’t know the answer.” Switch it to “I don’t know the answer but I’m smart enough to find out”.

Visualize your success

Maybe it’s an upcoming presentation or just something you hope for as part of the future of your career. Once you have an image of what that might look like use that as your motivation that you can trust the process and you will get to where you want to be.

Reward yourself

Give yourself that pat on the back that you truly deserve every once in a while or maybe you can even treat yourself to that thing that’s been sitting on your wish list for ages.

Courage comes from taking risks

Don’t wait until you’re confident to start putting yourself out there. Courage comes from taking risks so changing your behaviour allows your confidence to build.
