Are you sure the only you is you?
Watch out. The gap in the door... it's a separate reality.
The only me is me. Are you sure the only you is you?
Those who are as obsessed with Silent Hill as I am will instantly recognise that line. For those who don't, it comes from one of the first scenes from the cancelled Silent Hills game, once known as P.T. (playable trailer). As you awaken in a dark room, there is a bloody bag on the table that utters that phrase. So what made me think of this line today? Is this just a random thought from the deepest corners of my horrific mind?
No. It was inspired by a post by @aantonop where he talks about being the real aantonop, which you can find here: https://steemit.com/impersonators/@aantonop/the-real-aantonop . It particularly, if what briefly, deals with impersonators of famous people, or at least ones that are trending, in order to grow your own following.
It has once again made me wonder, why do people do this? Do they lack that certain personal identity that makes the rest of us confident in who we are, and would rather steal another identity as a way of feeling like they belong? I remember when I was looking for Emma Watson on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as a way of stalking... uhm, I mean, following her. I was shocked at how many fake accounts there were with images of her face on their profiles. Thankfully, she has her account verified and I know which is her real account.
So, does this mean that once people start creating accounts based on you that you have made it big? It would seem so based on this filthy habit. I've also noticed a rise in so called parody or fan accounts, where you can follow them just to hear everything and anything about the actual person you want to follow. And half time time that account simply posts mumblings of their own thoughts, when you could have just followed updates from the real person.
Are you sure the only you is you? Have you googled or looked on social media platforms just to confirm that no one else out there is impersonating you? I would love to say I feel blessed that no one has bothered to impersonate me, and yet in the same breath I almost feel insulted. Also, I had requested that my twitter account be verified with a tick 4 months ago, and even they don't think I am important enough to respond to. The horror....
Feel free to let me know in the comments your thoughts on impersonators, and if you have ever found anyone impersonating you online. I'd love to know.

Hahahahahahahahaha was wondering how many would comment on that
This account above here.. posted the same gif on my post a day or so ago - I first thought it's a robot. If it is, it's quite smart. It lifts out a keyword then goes tekere!
Seriously though, I have found multiple versions of myself, but all of them were created by myself and I later forgot about them. Although those are pseudonyms which i chose at any given time to as a method to avoid self censoring myself. When we write social comment or create something open for critique, I believe it helps in the creative process for me at least, to adopt a different role and name. Perhaps it just reflects that I need my meds LOL
Mmm this comment definitely gives some food for thought. Thank you
Sometimes I admire impersonators, the balls and attitude as well as the financial mind to scam and grift. But at the same time preying on innocent people, ruining their lives and riding on someone elses hard life grind is deplorable.
