Dismantle the ICE Detention System

in #immigration6 years ago

The existence of the ICE detention system is premised on this fact:

  • Some people who are supposed to show up to court, do not show up.

I say, "so what if they don't show up? It's not that important."

The immigrant is making a choice:

  • Show up to court, and risk being deported back to a dangerous or impoverished place.

  • Evade the court, and become an "illegal immigrant".

If someone determines that they would like to live in the United States illegally, that's their vote of confidence that the people of the United States are kinder than their government, and that the economy of the United States is fairer and better than where they came from.

We should be flattered that they are willing to break our laws to stay here.

The court's decisions are based on determining if a migrant is:

  • Legitimately fleeing danger

  • Simply looking for economic stability and opportunity

If they are economic migrants, they are supposed to be deported.

Well, fuck that shit. What is this country about, if not economic opportunity? That's all that everyone seems to care about. That's what the government seems to push, more than anything else. The people even elected a billionaire businessman into the presidency.

Yet, when a person comes here to make some money, to escape an impoverished economy, we say "no"? That is farcical.

A migrant appearing to court is taking a risk that they'll be deported. If they really want to become an American they'll need to spend money to re-enter the country illegally, and become an undocumented immigrant, and hope for the best.

So most migrants show up to court.

There's no need to detain people while they wait for their court date.

The entire detention system, which is a boondoggle for cops, should be dismantled.
