What a nice story. I think you represented the content very well and you depicted the confused but also leading ape greatly. What I would improve? Maybe putting more contrast in the different levels of the landscape,for example darken the deeper parts of the forest. But that's only a thought. I think it's great the way it is :)

Yes you are right about the depth, farther objects should be darker, have less contrast and look less saturated than nearer ones.
