Promoting Nuclear Disarmament

in #illustration7 years ago

Will peace always be this fragile?

I created some poster images for a nonprofit group focused on nuclear disarmament. They wanted to address this "out of sight, out of mind" situation. Although we don't want to think about it, we are all vulnerable with nuclear missiles around, and we all live in the shadow of these terrifying weapons whether we realize it or not. Since we can easily forget the dangers when we don't see them, I wanted to somehow portray the absurdity of accepting and living with these weapons.

Idea 1: Hidden in plain sight

In this scene I drew a "nuclear family" enjoying a day out at the waterfront park, flying a kite and taking in the view. Yet in the skyline is the menacing image of a missile dwarfing the otherwise pleasant feeling. In contrast to the pastel colors, it is rendered in grays only. Although the missile dwarfs the other elements for size, the implications of it seem to go unnoticed. It is a reminder that we are all vulnerable with these weapons in place.

Idea 2: Underground missile silos

The safety of this happy community is compromised by the underground nuclear missile silos that are hidden from view.

Idea 3: You cannot hide from nuclear weapons

The image of a missile aiming at a gated community is to suggest that a person's wealth cannot protect them from a nuclear weapon. The gated community behind the protective fence in this scene is just as vulnerable as everyone else.

Steemians, thanks for checking out this post. Although it is definitely a sobering topic, I hope you can appreciate the work for what it is meant to do. Please follow me at @mrsomebody and comment below your thoughts!
