Slaves of Ignorance: When you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods

In the Epistle to the Galatians Paul tells us with a beautiful metaphor, how men before the birth of Jesus, lived under the yoke of the law of Moses or slaves of ignorance, but not as slaves condemned for life to that life, but as children who are heirs to a promise, the arrival of our Lord Jesus: "What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world" Galatians 4:1-3.
Jesus, tells us Paul, comes to offer us a new pact, not based on compliance with a rigid law, but on the freedom of mercy (gentleness, kindness, compassion) and fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity): "But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship." Galatians 4:4-5.
And by Jesus we are justified, and we receive the grace to live according to the spiritual nature: "Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ´Abba, Father.´ So you are no longer a slave, but God's child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir." Galatians 4:6-7.

Jesus comes to bring us eternal life, he is the good shepherd (John 10:11), and it is by eternal life, the contemplative life or worship of wisdom, that we know God. That is why those who do not know Jesus are slaves of ignorance and serve false gods like money: "Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods." Galatians 4:8.
