Igbos are well renowned for their use of proverbs or idioms in expressing themselves when they speak in gatherings or meetings.

1. Ndi igbo si na gidigidi bu ugwu eze

Literal meaning/Translation: Unity is strength. With Unity in Purpose, unity of mind together, we achieve more.

There is strength in numbers.

Literal meaning/Translation: A dead person shall have all the sleep necessary.

  1. Nwata choba nke ya, o buru ajo nwa

Literal meaning/Translation: you lick a hot soup little by little

Literal meaning/Translation: a pretty face does not deserve to be pinched

Literal meaning/Translation: an impossibility is too much a task for a hero, but a hero is determined by the impossibility

  1. önye ulö ya na-agba ôku anaghi achu ôke

Literal meaning/Translation: someone that has his house on fire doesn't go chasing a rat

  1. ezigbo ôyi kariri ajo nwanne

Literal meaning/Translation: a good friend is better than a bad sibling (brother/sister)

  1. Ndi Igbo si na onye yere nwata nkakwu ga enye kwa ya mmiri oji akwo aka

Literal meaning/Translation: He who give a child a bush rat must also provide him with water to wash his hand.

Literal meaning/Translation: When a child eats what has been keeping him awake, he will sleep

  1. awo anaghi agba oso ehehie na efu
