RE: IFC S2R10: A Hero Short

in #ifc6 years ago

My inspiration for the idea comes from a dream that I had the other night. I should mention though, that I rarely write fictional stories and do not believe that I am any good at them.

Sounds interesting! But why do you say you're not good at writing fiction? The zombie story I read of yours a while back was epic! I think maybe you're a bit hard on yourself like I am at times cause I think you're great at writing fiction. Truly. I was super impressed by that zombie story and have a feeling I'll like this one as well.

He builds simpler versions of the train across the country and people pay him to see them and sit in their presence. The king has men tell stories of the train, convincing the people that they are evil, and that the train is their only salvation. Over time, the people forget about the beauty in the world around them and eventually they relinquish all control of themselves over to the king.

That's rather intriguing, reminds me of the Christian mythology.

He raises his bow to take the rabbit just as it turns to look at him. The two get locked in a stare that seems to last an eternity. It’s as if the boy is looking through the rabbit’s eyes. He sees another boy that looks just like him, pointing a bow back at him. He can feel his heart pounding and realizes that his life is about to end. The boy lowers the bow and the rabbit bolts out of the garden.
Something has awakened in the boy. Something that was buried deep inside him that he had forgotten.
Off in the distance a figure stands in the shadows watching.

Deep.. I can vibe with this a lot. I wonder who the figure is standing in the shadows?

In a village near the farm a dwarf puts on a show in the streets. He is not well received by the crowd. The crowd boos and yell obscenities. He is laughed at. The boy walks up to the dwarf and hands him a coin. Some of the crowd moves on while others continue to watch.
“I liked the show,” he says to the dwarf.

I like the sentiments of the boy in this one and the last one, I wonder if they are the same boy? And if the boy is you? And a part of your consciousness? I've heard it said that all of the characters in our dreams are "us".. Maybe in a similar way that I believe in Pantheism that we're all expressions of the "source", different fragments of the "one" perhaps..

Despite the fear and madness all around him, the boy continues to spread kindness wherever he goes. He is like a light shining in the darkness and with each person that the boy encounters the light gets stronger and more powerful. Small pockets of light begin to appear in different places across the country.

I love this part! Though I'm worried for the boy.

A thumping sound begins to rise in the air. It quickly becomes a thunderous roar. The crowd stops and looks up from what they are doing. They find themselves surrounded by thousands of rabbits beating their feet against the ground and staring at them intently.
The crowd looks back at the boy with his clothes torn and his skin bruised and bloody.
Suddenly they are fearful and ashamed. They quickly leave the farm.

Yay for the rabbits! :) That's awesome to see they helped when he was being attacked.

In a world like ours a battle between the light and the darkness wages on. Every now and again a hero awakens among the crowds of people and adds a little more light to the darkness. All the while a train continues to run on an endless track.

Once again.. Very deep! I had a feeling I would be impressed and I was.
These were inspired by a dream you had recently? Those are some really fascinating images from the you had! Also hit me especially hard today as I contemplate things in my own personal life and the symbolism you shared was extra meaningful based on some stuff I've been thinking about.. Really great writing and super interesting dreams! Thanks for sharing! Sorta was like a metaphor for life especially with the eternal train and how it keeps going and doing its thing regardless of the varying perceptions of people who observe and witness it.

I also really like the end part about how "Every now and again a hero awakens among the crowds of people and adds a little more light to the darkness.".. That fits in really good with the theme and really ties it all together. Excellent work leaky20! Also congrats on the curie! :D

As always, thanks for the in depth comment. Yeah it seems that we are always our worst critics but I'm glad you liked it and the zombie story. Im going to try and write some more fiction when ideas come to me. It helps with the imagination which sometimes I feel I'm losing.

I think there is a bit of that boy in all of us. The boy could have easily been a girls as well. I believe that each person has both light and dark in them. It's what we choose to put out into the world.

I like what you said about expressions of the source. That's interesting.

Yeah the story was based on a dream. It had a lot of similarities and also a lot of differences. The story evolved and changed as I wrote it mostly to keep it short and to make things fit together a bit nicer. In the dream a war broke out and the dwarf, who was also a clown in the dream, had run away from being a king himself. He appeared at the end of the dream with an army to help the boy because the boy was kind to him and showed him that humanity was worth fighting for. I wish I could have incorporated that into the story but I found it too challenging. The rabbits also viciously attacked the enemy instead of warning them off and the dark kings army left the king when they realized that the battle would be hard for them. They were only with the king because they were being paid to be there so there was no true loyalty to him. The king was alone in the end. That's the just of it.

So yeah if I followed the actual dream the story would have been way way longer and more complicated hahaha. Too much for a post. But it was a very interesting dream. I dont usually have such vivid dreams.

Sounds like you're going through some stuff today. I hope everything's alright?

You're welcome. Glad to hear you're going to try to write some more fiction! I should as well, it's fun and people told me I'm pretty good at it as well.

Word.. I agree with that.

Very interesting and fascinating! Thanks for elaborating and expanding.

Ah.. I see.. Sounds like quite a dream indeed!

Sounds like you're going through some stuff today. I hope everything's alright?

Thanks for caring.. What happened was I had watched the end of the movie I made called "Are You Out There?" I'm not sure if you've seen it or not, but the end is really intense and there's a audio recording of a guy talking about how if you get too deep into trying to help the world that it's really dangerous and can kill you and your family. And.. It just sort of reminded me of how dangerous it is to try to do what is right.. Sort of like your story of your dream did.. I think that's a major reason so many people never try to really stand up for so much injustice in the world.. Cause they just wanna live their lives and not face the risk of being harmed or killed or having their family or friends harmed or killed. It's a sad truth that it's a lot easier to just stay out of it it's a sad truth that if you try to get too deep into doing what is right, that the people who are doing what is wrong may not like that and try to stop in you a variety of ways up to and including the ultimate form of killing someone.

You should totally write fiction as well!
I havent seen any if your movies. Are they on youtube or where does one find them?
I think I see what you are saying about it being dangerous to help people. Many activists and such seem to become targets, sometimes who get taken out. I think that's why it takes such courage to go against the status quo.

Word. When I get some time I'd like to follow up on my Apolymask fiction story, people seemed to really like the first one. I also have some other ideas though time is an issue! I can't even keep up with my messages, so it can be difficult to do so many things I wanna do.

And yeah my vids are on YouTube, here's a link to the documentary I mentioned.

I forget how long it is. I think 45 mins or so? Would be happy to hear your thoughts if you check it out.

Also yup.. It seems like a good mount of people die from speaking out too much, though it can often be difficult to prove since the killers are good at killing. Though it really does seem like it happens quite a bit if you research the subject.. It sure does take a lot of courage, I think many would rather just enjoy their lives than get involved, but.. Sometimes people have no choice and it gets forced on them, and othertimes they realize we're all being threatened by what's happening in the world.

I watched the video. It was really good. You definitly have a talent in video production and directing. I find it quite challenging to watch the scenes of extreme hate. They make me feel a bit hopeless, so I appreciated that you put in some images and scenes of positivity in the world where people show and spread love. I think it gives hope to the viewer and shows that things can change.
Very good video overall. I'm impressed!
